Peter Sagan for the win. Valverde as a dark horse.

GvA in a sprint finish, or Cuddles from a somewhat long break

Tough to bet against Sagan in any of the Ardennes after what he did on stage 4 of Tirreno. If Gilbert finds some form it could be epic showdowns with Valverde also in the mix.

1. Robert Gesink
2. Chris Anker Sorenson
3. Jurgen Van Den Broeck

Or maybe Matti Breschel instead of Gesink.

Three of the least punchy riders in the peloton, hell, they are not punchy enough even by standards of GC riders. Only way that'll happen is if they get in a break.

I'm going with
1. Greg van Avermaet
2. Samuel Sanchez
3. Purito Rodriguez

And of course, dark horse pick of a certain Mr. Gilbert

i want purito rodriguez to win. top 3 for me are.
1.purito rodriguez
2.peter sagan
3.wout poels

outside chances are ryder hesjdal. seemed to be coming into form at basque country and is highly motivated for success here. Phil Gilbert i cannot bet against him even though he is not going great. wout poels is very explosive but needs to time it right to have success.

I bet Old Man Cadel will bring home BMC's first Pro-Tour (or is it the World Tour now) win of the season. Afterwards, UCI will promptly have him undergo facial reconstructive surgery as his chin is deemed to be an aerodynamic fairing.

"Valverde as a dark horse"

Wow, you're really going out on a limb ... ;^>

Can Sagan hang on the climbs? It's hard to think of anything that kid can't do, but I don't think he'll be there in the finale.

Will the Schleck boys show up? Can J-Rod finish higher than fourth? Cunego? Horner? Cadel?

I'll go with Valverde FTW, and golden Sanchez for second. The other seven mentioned above will be in the top 15 or so. Voeckler too.

Albasini is my dark horse pick. or maybe Dekker, or Ulissi. How many are we allowed, anyway?

Of course, Tommeke is riding, so all bets are off!!

I was expecting an epic Gilbert vs Valverde battle, with Valverde winning out.

However, didn't Valverde crash a few weeks ago? I recall reading somewhere that he was recovering from the crash.

I reckon Gilbert is going to be back in form by next week, but I'm betting on asuper-motivated Valverde to clean up, if he's healthy.

I'd like Sagan to win one, at least. He's The Real Thing. But I do think he's a year or two away from doing so (although next year, he's going to put Boonen and Cancellara in a world of pain on the cobbles).

Trying to talk the wife into going to Limburg region for UCI Road Worlds in September.

Anyone have experience traveling in southern Netherlands/Belgium region? Is it considered a nice part of Europe to visit to for say a week.

Can Sagan climb? He stayed with the GC contenders on the Big Bear stage of Tour of Cali and then smashed them in sprint. At Tirreno this year he dropped everyone but Nibali, Horner, Kreuziger and Di Luca and easily took the win.

The only person who might put Boonen in a "world of pain" on the cobbles is Fabian. Sagan is more of a puncher-sprinter than giant motor and better suited to the Ardennes.

It's all good, man

Valverde is a dark horse b/c of recent training accident.

As for Gilbert, the man hasn't finished higher than 15th in a UCI 1.1 race...

Maybe, and just maybe, he'll get his act together in 12 days for L-B-L.

And no one has yet mentioned Gerro, who placed 3rd in Amstel last year

While the entrées will be served beginning this weekend, an appetizer in the form of the Brabantse Pijl is tomorrow. I know i'll be "taking a break from work" around this time tomorrow to watch the finish.

Maastricht is awesome, and so is the rest of that southern little appendage of Holland. Antwerp is great to. Den Bosch. Not too keen on Eindhoven, but other people like it. Cologne in Germany is close.

I'd stay in Maastricht and do daytripsfrom there, and get drunk on the patios there every evening.

Well, Valverde fully ready etc. I'd say a main contender. No discussion. But do you know if he's in good shape right now? Nope. No one really knows.
He probably doesn't even know how well he'll do given the lack of racing. So, yes...dark horse.

hopefully not on Amstel Gold or Amstel Light (though God bless them for sponsoring cycling races) as that's the Dutch equivalent of horse piss

Let's see how he develops. He appears to have the potential to be one of the most well-rounded, complete riders in a while, so ideal Classics material. He stayed with Cancellara when he attacked in one of the recent races, and he's mixed it up in the sprint with Boonen and others. Not many riders can say that - especially at the age of 22.

We know that. It's not even sold in Holland anymore. There's actually quite a number of nice craft breweries in Limburg, so I think taking in your required dose of alcoholic meditation is quite achievable there.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: Liege, although close by, is a hole.

Sure, Valverde has had a bit of a layoff, but he was going well at Paris-Nice (stage win and 3rd overall). Clearly he knows how to train even when he's not racing (cough-suspended-cough).

So I think he'll show up for the Ardennes.

except Amstel, Stella, and Heineken are considered "fancy" by most Americans. Yes, you can say it: most of us have not taste.

I think he will too...but one day races are a bit like that....you don't race a lot, you don't do great (often)...I'd see him more for La Fleche Wallone, or LBL.

Good call on Gerrans!

Wouldn't it be awesome if he and Valverde end up sprinting head-to-head (for the 3rd time this year)?
