News of The Sergio...

Hot off the presses - after a difficult season, The Sergio and Planet X have had an amicable parting of ways. (http://sergio-marques.blog.com/) This means that there is possibly some room in the PX stable for a couple of you who may be looking to get on the PX bandwagon, but more importantly, that The Sergio is (probably) open to a new ride (no news of a replacement bike sponsor as of yet).

Bike company dudes - this is your big chance! Homeboy could win IMFL on YOUR steed!

I know jonnyo is already dangling cookies under his nose...

You had to know that was coming. What on earth are they doing to the guys who were/are representing them??? JonnyO, The Sergio, who's next?

Now I guess we know why Paulo was so quick to buy Peter Reid's old bike. Paulo is obviously smarter than he lets on.

It is about time. Planet-X, even though it is run by a nice guy, seems to have always been undercapitalized to support a great athlete like Sergio. Hopefully he will go with Orbea like jonnyo.

Will all the PX bandwagon jumpers now have to switch too?

I am sure that Sergio will be a great representative for whoever he partners with. When I worked at QR I had a very good relationship with him.

The Sergio hopefully gets a new Blog partner too, because it is impossible to look at the comments. it seems to default to a "sign up for blog.com" page.

I can't say that I've ever had a problem reading the comments on his blog... One needs to sign up in order to post comments, but I'm pretty sure that they've always been viewable - at least to me.

What happened to them working on a non-UCI bike with him?

Jonnyo is also moving on? I didn't hear that. Is the tide turning from PX?

"tide turning"

Not to be offensive, but I think Spencer Smith and Gordo are their "marquee" riders (along with loads of track/time trial specialists). jonnyo likes to move around on bikes a lot anyway - he will be just fast on whatever bike like most good cyclists. I just hope the "switch" to whatever brings the Sergio some better mojo for FL. Curious to see what he will run on that flat course!

Well "not to be offensive" in return ;-) Is Spencer Smith still racing? I know he had a good race at IMAZ in 06, but anything since? And what about his S2 clothing line? Wasn't it supposed to be out in May or something and still nothing?

And I know Gordo is a popular dude, but I think Sergio, in terms of publicity and possible upside was probably an equally important investment for PX. But you are right in that Gordo does carry a lot of weight, especially through his blog and all, so that works to PX's advantage for sales.

Khai,
I appreciate your feedback and advice, but the funny thing is, I actually know how blogs work. :-)
I am saying something is not working right as I can't get to the comments. I use the newest version of Firefox on a Mac and when I click on comments I see the comments for a brief period of time before it ends up at the "sign up for blog.com to get your own blog" screen.

Yeah, I don't know what was going with his clothing line (S2), but I can assure you it is real and shipping since I have several pieces sent to me ;) that I have been wearing for a few months. Something about the supplier in Italy. Also, he IS racing still ... you shall see. The time trialists/track guys really need their skin suits for sure

Yeah, it does that for me too and I'm not sure why it's rolling over to that sign-up page. It did not used to do that and it does that in both Firefox and Safari on Macs. You can get to the comments if you hit the stop button on your browser at the right time though...

I'm pretty sure you're jumping to false conclusions. Why would you assume that? There's nothing here or in Sergio's blog that says anything like that.

I might be jumping to conclusions, but I don't know how else to read it (from the Sergio's blog):

So I promised some more news and I guess the end of my contract with
Planet-X is news.

As you all know, things have not been according to plan this year in
many aspects. Even if it is disappointing for everyone involved, I
think that in sports we need to see the big picture and stay the
course that has already brought me so much success and improvement.
Also it is important to have around people that believe in me through
both the good and the bad moments. Fortunately I am very lucky that I
have a lot of people that support me in a very positive way, and in
these last months it was possible to see who are the people that
really believe in me and are behind me 100%.

In the last months it was clear that Planet-X and I were not on the
same page regarding a lot of issues, so it was decided that we parted
ways in a friendly way. I am thankful for all the support that I
received from Planet-X these past months and wish them a lot of
success in the future.

You have a much more glamourized idea of the world of professional triathlon than the reality. We're talking about not even 5-digit deals here, hell, most athletes like Jonnyo only get free stuff, and not a lot of it.

Even for a small bicycle like P-X, it doesn't break their bank paying an athlete like Sergio. They spend more money giving schwag to guerrilla fighters like rroof, R10C and a few more covert people. In the end, it's a marketing option.

Not to be offensive (...)

Rod,

I'm glad you started by saying that, otherwise all that you said would be quite offensive to Jonny and Sergio.

Do you have a bike contract for next year? I could use a stauch defender of my cause here like yourself. And it would also be great for marketing, since you're well respected. How would you like to go back to riding a P3C with "pstriathlon.com" stickers? Think about it.

No offense intended, of course.

None taken, and point taken. I do like the staunch defender analogy as again, I'm amazed at your command of the English language ;)

Paulo, I would be open to that deal. I have a very fast internet connection which should help a lot. I ride a 58cm. I would also accept peter reid's bike as long as you leave the SRM on :).
