I just got my new Garmin Vector 3’s in the mail. All installed, new cleats on and everything is sinc’ed up to both Garmin Connect on phone and my 735 watch. Now what? Anybody know of a “power for dummies” book or thread I can look at? Goal is to figure out what watts I should be using for an IM ride next October.

Hi, congrats on getting in the power game. For now, simply collecting data isn't the worst thing in the world. In the meantime, consider reading a good deal of "Raining and Racing with a Powermeter".

The other good recommendation would be considering a coach if you haven't.

Congrats on getting a power meter. If you use it properly, it will be the single biggest investment in understanding how to train and potentially race.
Like everyone else said, you should do some reading. For me the biggest revelation was TSS and IF. It helped me understand when I needed to ride slow and easy, and when I needed to smash myself. I still have riding buddies that think that unless they push themselves on every ride, they are wasting their training time.
If you don't have the time/inclination to learn about all this stuff, then get a coach. Personally I don't have one, but it took me a few months to get familiar with how to use the power meter properly.

”If you don't have the discipline to read a $17 book, then hire a coach”.
Really??
Really??

You can make it complex, or you can make it simple.
Simple
- monitor your power for a few weeks in different kinds of sessions.
- you (should) get a pretty good feel for what power is at the levels:
easy,
tempo (breathing significantly but 'I can hold this),
threshold (breathing hard, this hurts, I really don't want to go any harder)
'max' - really hard, hurts really fast
- then use the appropriate power depending on the workout.
- finally, keep an eye on it and adjust appropriately
(if you want a training programme that's a different question)
Go to YouTube and search for TeamODZ WUWP ( ) or Endurance Lab on iTunes. WUWP is What’s Up With Power. The host goes through the Training and Racing with Power book and explains it in a simple manner. There is also a question and answe portion. The show is live on Wednesday mornings on Facebook, but it is West Coast time. Too late for me. Have to be at work then.
