New Half IM Distance Race (AL)
On their Facebook....

It is official! Team Magic will host a half iron distance race in Pell City, AL on August 16, 2014. Details coming soon including early entry discounted fees in December.

Anyone know anything about possible venue? Are there alligators in Alabama? (Serious question from the Southern newbie.)

Pell City is outside Birmingham towards Atlanta.

No alligators to worry about.

Would be really cool if they could do something with Talladega, but that would be a real stretch.

Should be a hot race that time of year. Big rolling hills or smaller rollers depending on the route. Seem will likely be in Lake Morgan/Coosa River. Gonna be a hot run.

I pumped for this race and I'm sure others are too. With the number of people in the SE doing IMCHOO this works out perfect. I wonder if they will put it in Huntsville? It would be beautiful but pretty hilly.

I'm signing up when it opens...too tempting not to.

Thanks for the info and very glad to hear no alligators!

Now, I'd be up for a longer than normal bike if we could do a Ricky Bobby around Talladega!!

I live in Birmingham, so this race is perfect. Only about 20 miles east of the city. This gives the Birmingham area a duathlon, sprint, and half, so I'll get to race half of my season sleeping in my own bed. Couldn't be more excited. Gonna be really hot in August, though.

The 12th annual Atomic Man Triathlon - Half Iron Distance is another option on 8/31 - Labor Day weekend at 81 miles North of Chattanooga. $100 entry includes pre-race pasta dinner and pretty good race day package. Rate goes to $130 Jan. 1.

Yeah... This one will definitely be a scorcher. I hope they have a ton of ice for the run... Has anyone done a Team Magic race before?

That's sounds miserably hot and humid. But I might have to do it if I'm in Te area still.

I've done 3-4 Team Magic races each year for the past 4 or 5 seasons. Very well run.

Thanks. So where is somewhere to stay? I've been out of Nashville once since I've moved here and that was only an hour away.

Leave your shenanigans out of this thread.

Finally, Alabama is getting long course races. We need more.

Will definitely be a hot and humid day but good course. TM puts on excellent races so have no doubt this will be a quality event.

Bike course probably taking the loop around the lake including going over the dam. Good rollers.

Letting folks know their options has no hidden agenda or mis-information. Atomic Man has a great history and is a great bargain. Management group puts on over 12 USA Triathlon sanctioned events a year and actually helps other sanctioned events on free weekends!

It is good to see other half options "pop up" in the Southeast. The heat preparations of event producers to ensure athlete safety with new longer races being held in the Southeast during June, July & August will be paramount.

Pretty sure IM Chatt is a big reason why they are starting this race. They did an informal poll a while back in the IM Chatt Group page. I'm doing Lake Logan Half because its closer to me. Near Asheville, NC, $125 until the end of the year.

Is it a wave/group start?
No, our races are unique with a time-trial start. Every few seconds a racer enters the water which allows for an easier, spaced out swim. USAT studies have shown that the time-trial start is the safest way to begin the swim portion. It also helps ease congestion on the swim/bike/run courses.

Yeah I participated in the survey. Lake Logan looks awesome, I just cant justify driving that far from ATL when I have this and the Atomic Man one..

I don't blame you... I was all about the Lake Logan Half until I saw there was going to be a race 35 minutes from my front door.

Yeah... The race director emailed me and said I should have only paid $150 so they are giving me a credit for $25 to any of their other races. Oh well.

Team Magic had a Du that finished on the track at Talladega. I remember thinking that is some steep banking as we rode down the track. I still have the shirt somewhere. That 1/2 could have some real climbing in it if they head east.

You are correct! I see this race director most every year in Chattanooga at the waterfront tri helping out Team Magic with the race. He does a good job with his races as well.

I wouldn't consider this hijacking as I have no problems mentioning a nearby event. Atomic Man's pricing is more accessible and allows one to do more races in a season. I rarely do city of Chicago events as they are 50% more up to double the price of suburban smaller events.

Swim - Bike - Run the rest is just clothing changes.
