Need a super fast bike, for racing to work.

For the past 2 years I've been taking my trust mountain bike to work and back, however the winters have not been easy on it and it's starting to fall apart everywhere (What do you expect for 500 bucks I guess). The bike is making it more difficult to leave other commuters eating my dust, so I need to spend some money, but not too much money, because these unofficial 8 mile races to and from work aren't worth more than $1000.... or are they?
Please slowtwich, recommend me a road bike that fulfils the following criteria:
- Needs to eat winter for breakfast (-35C)
- Fast.

What does that mean? What type of bicycle / components have difficulty digesting cold weather?
Or do you mean bad quality roads (potholes, etc), salt, and possible snow? In that case I'd get a titanium cross bike (won't rust) with large tires (to suck up the potholes) but not too large (so you keep your "fast" requirement).
That'll cost more than $1000 though. So I guess ignore my entire post.

Probably will run you a bit more than $1000, but I'm in love with the versatility of aluminum cyclocross race bikes with disc brakes. The Felt F65X would be my choice, but the new CAADX Disc, and Crux Disc are all nice.
You could at least take up cross and that would make it seem less insane to spend almost $2000 on a commuter.

I like the cycle cross idea. Disc brakes, aluminum frame, road bike geometry will be fast and rugged. And I don't see spending more than $1000 as a problem. My welfare bike is a specialized allez and I love it. It's just got to be fun to ride and "cheap" enough.
I am exactly where every decision that I've made and every action that I've taken has put me.

I'm pushing the price point a bit but if you want new, I'd go steel with a Gunnar Roadie or Surly Pacer and cobble together components from EBay and close outs.
Or go full EBay and get an old Italian steel frame for cheap. I'm rocking an early 70s Colnago as my townie. I paid 100 for the frame and maybe twice that on a chrome straight blade fork from Soma.

I'd go with a rigid 29'r. Narrow slicks in the summer, and then big tires in the winter.

I don't know. To me winter == salt + metal frame == rusted frame.
I'd go titanium or aluminium.
Then again until AverageGuy chimes in again with exactly what the heck he's looking for, all these recommendations are kind of useless!

No need to overthink this. Get a used beater road bike or cross bike and put cross tires on it. If you can find aluminum or titanium in your price range for corrosion resistance that is fine, but not a deal breaker. Just clean the salt and road grime off the bike as you would your car. I would take the money I save and buy some cold weather cycling gear. That is by far a bigger issue than the bike itself.

Two Words:
Dirty Disco
http://shop.titusti.com/...ameset-p/froocxd.htm
Its palmares include a 92 day ride around the world. UNSUPPORTED
http://road.cc/...und-world-record-kit
Go with a 8 speed internal hub and flat bar. Single ring up front. Cheaper (maybe lighter) and simpler than any other drivetrain. Hydraulic discs. Cheapest 29er disc front wheel you can find/steal.
No Rust, fast, bombproof.
Dirty. Disco. Done.

You bet I want to get to work fast. Why? I have some kind of complex where I never want to get passed. It's probably for the best I don't drive to work....

This is exactly my reasoning behind needing my bike to be winterproof, and why my old bike is in absolute shambles. The salt gets everywhere!

There is no more salt than a Nova Scotia winter. And I ride a 1997 steel Trek Hard Tail with the skinniest 26" tires I could find. I just wash it down frequently (which isn't that hard) and replace the drive train each spring (cassette and chain are 7 speed so cheap). I also removed the front derailleur to eliminate moving parts. The only thing I would love to add to it is disc brakes. Way better in the winter and way less money than going through rims.

I'd check out State Bicycle Co. -

. Got a "commuter" bike from them earlier this summer - loving it.

Flat or hilly? If your commute is not too hilly, I would get a single speed. They are pretty much bullet proof. If you set it up for the correct gear, it will fly as well. I would try to get an aluminum frame to avoid rust.

The Raleigh Furley is available for ~$700. Steel single speed w/rear der hanger, and disc brakes (plus, how about that safety orange color).

Unfortunately there are a couple short steep hills to climb on the way home from work :(

I have 2 bikes for my work commute, the summer bike is a regular Marinoni road bike, my winter bike is a cro-moly single-speed with belt drive.
In a perfect world if I could only have 1 bike to commute year round I'd get a ti roadbike with a belt drive and a 5 speed internal gear hub

Wait what? They have 35C in the minus too? ;)
How do the bike tires not turn solid and brittle at that temperature? How do you not crash on ice patches? Frost bite from windchill?
The coldest I ever rode was 30F (-1C) and that was as cold as I ever wanted to be on a bike!
The 110F y'all are complaining about? That sounds perfect to me. :)
