NBA Playoffs
I started to respond to the Lakers post in the Wildflower thread, but instead thought I'd see if anyone else out there is stoked about the NBA playoffs. I'm rooting for the Mavs but I think they still might be a year away from winning it all. I do think this might be the year the Lakers go down, though.

The way I see it, there are only 4 teams with a real shot:

Lakers

Kings

Spurs

Mavs

Do the East teams even deserve a mention??

You must be on the East Coast. Or Canada, possibly?

After being a lacadasical (sp?) fan during the regular season, I do get fired up watching the playoffs. The players actually hustle after loose balls, and play defense which is tough to do during an 82 game season.

My money remains on the Lakers because "to be the man you got to beat the man."

I'm a native New Yorker, transplanted to Seattle about 13 years ago. Lifelong Islanders fan (woe is me.)
Surprisingly, there's lot's of ice time in Seattle - I still get to put the skates on once a week or so.

Check out the Hockey vs basketball playoffs columns at espn.com...

Just couldn't resist taking that shot at a Mavs fan. The NBA champs will definitely come from the west. It'll be the Lakers again this year, though the other teams have caught up some.

Im psyched for theplayoffs , got my Steve Nash hat on right now, though I think the Mavs will los ein the West champs. I think the KNings have the lakers number this year, their team is soo deep, they 8 or 9 guys that could start on the lakers team ( not for SHaq daddy and Kobe, but the other stiffs). I pick the Kings, the East should just give up now, no chance, the Finals may be a 4 game series, 5 games max.

I'm with ya' poser. I'm a native Dallasite, though it's been a few years since I lived there. I agree, I think next year is our year. I think we're one player short and Cube will find him in the off-season...I'm not giving up on this year, though.

BTW, these Kings fans are driving me CRAZY!! It would make my year if the Mavs took them out in the second round!!

I think the Devils are going to take the cup - Brodeur is quietly putting together a hall of fame career, but he needs another cup to seal the deal. Dallas does look darn good, though...

In the NBA (OK, I admit it, I turn the channel between periods - after Don Cherry) I have to bite the bullet and take the #@*^*&*^ Lakers. Yuck. I need a bath now. Somebody PLEASE take these guys out, and while you're at it, kill the person who defaced Shaq's ball - THE reason he manned up and started playing hard again.

You're right about Shaq. As much as I hate to admit it, he is (in the immortal words of David Duffield) a force with which to be reckoned (roll the "r" for effect.) Yuck. Bad taste in my mouth.

The Lakers have the best (Shaq) and (very) arguably the second best (Kobe) players in the league. That's pretty hard to beat, even when the rest of their starting 5 would ride the pine on any of the other contenders. I repeat, Yuck. I hate the Lakers - almost as much as I hate the Flyers.

Now that's classic. I'm NOT a Laker fan, but I love Shaq. He's the only player in the NBA worth listening to. Everyone else just spouts the same tired cliches - you know, "we just have to take it one game at a time", "we don't care who we play", "we have to give it 110%", etc, etc, etc... You get the impression that he truly understands that it's just a game and it's amusing to him that these journalists are hanging on his every word like he is Aristotle or some head of state instead of just a huge guy that plays a game for a living. I think it's funny when people actually take what he says seriously. The guy's a horrible actor/rapper, though.

It'll be the Lakers again this year, though the other teams have caught up some. I don't know about that. The Lakers are looking more and more vulnerable, just not to the Mavs. (They lost last night to the Timberwolves in LA w/ no KG in OT). I will admit, they seem to have the Mavs #.

Okay, as a King's fan, I'll bite. jaylew, aren't you in Sacto? And you are a Mavs fan? Wow, talk about masochism. Probably a Cowboys fan too, right? As for the Lakers having the Mavs number, who dosen't (at least among the West's elite)? I don't really dislike the Mavs, I just find 'em funny. Runnin' all those goofy looking guys out on the floor (Nash, Nowitzki, Bradley, Najerah, Van Exel - the ugliest team in the NBA), playin' a center who is afraid to go into the paint, havin' the best record all year only to stumble into the post season and nearly draw the Lakers, and then strugglin' to beat a Blazers team without its starting backcourt. Those guys are a riot. But at least they are taking care of business with the 2-0 lead, unlike the Spurs. The only time all year I am rooting for that team so that they can be fresh to face the Lakers and they go and loose homecourt to the Suns. At this rate the Mavs and Kings will be back at Arco for games three and four before the Lakers even set foot in San Antonio. Mavs -Kings will be a hellofa series, though hopefully we will be celebrating on your floor with a 4-1 victory.

Aggghhh.

I'm still in a state of shock from Detroit getting swept.

waaaaahhhhh!!!

I can't even bring myself to watch another game. Thak god Colorado got eliminated.

That being said, a Dallas (Stars) v. NJ (Devils) would be a good consolation finals matchup. I got to watch both Marty Turco and John Madden in their formative years at UofM. Both are great players.

Mavs were 2-2 against the Spurs, 'Wolves, and Blazers and while they were 1-3 against the Kings, the last two losses were by a combined 3 points and the won the last in OT. Believe it or not, the Kings were my 2nd favorite team before I moved out here. But Kings fans...
