Morton's Neuroma (yes, I've done a search)
So I've done a search and read the many threads about this, and have a question.

I've never had any problems with my feet while running. I ran appx. 25-30 miles a week in the summer and have worked up to my highest run total of 39 miles last week. When I went out for an easy run on Monday, the ball of my left foot hurt under the 4th toe. I blamed it on running in an old pair of Kinvaras that didn't have much cushion left. Went to my track workout Tuesday (wearing a pretty new pair of Fasttwitches) and about halfway through the foot started hurting. Interestingly, it didn't really hurt at all during the fast intervals, but it hurt quite a bit during the slow jog recoveries.

The pain was pretty much always there at that point, even when walking, so I didn't run Weds or Thurs. Foot felt quite a bit better today, so I ran for a bit -- about 2.5ish miles in the foot started hurting so I turned around and went home. Pain increased for about a mile then seemed to decrease a bit. Hurts a smidge now walking around but not much.

Can a neuroma develop so quickly? From being fine to being really sore in a matter of days? I did run 3 days in a row this weekend in a pair of Guides that are a bit tight in the toebox (enough so that I'm going to have to find a different shoe next time I buy a pair) -- I normally use them only for my long runs but was traveling and only wanted to bring one pair of running shoes. Additionally, I ran Sunday on a treadmill which wasn't particularly comfortable. But didn't have any pain in the foot during the outdoor runs and no pain walking around post-treadmill. It wasn't until the run on Monday that I discovered something was wrong.

I've read so many stories about neuromas being a constant struggle that if I am developing one I'd like to nip it in the bud. What should I do now to treat it? I have a 5K on Thanksgiving and a half marathon a few weeks later and would like to be in good shape to run both.

Morton's metatarsalgia usually isn't a true neuroma (growth), but instead an entrapment syndrome - where the tissues in the forefoot compress the nerve and cause pain. I've seen people develop it in a matter of days/week due to improper footwear: usually too narrow in the toebox as you describe, or breaking in those expensive new heels.

Go see a physio, if you can - they can give you more information, figure out what your recovery timeline, and help you with the stretches & taping/bracing to "nip it in the bud" as you say.

the cause of my neuroma was shoes to tight, even a little to tight. I found that when i run long distances or pounding down hills is when my neuroma would start to flare up, i deduced that my feet must swell a bit during that those types of run. I now loosen my shoes up quite a bit along with elastic laces and assure i have a shoe with a toe box that will accommodate the space i need. so far so good, been a couple years since i had a major flare.

i've never been dx'd with it but i find if i ramp up running too quickly it comes on. it also comes on (regardless) at around 15k for me (likely because my longest runs are 15-20k). if i take a walk break i can get a break in the pain. since i never run farther than 21k except in ironman it isn't too much of a problem for me.

Try this taping technique with KT Tape. It worked great for me.

It has nothing to do with any "magical" properties of kineseiotape. It simply serves as a mechanism to stop your toes from compressing together, thus preventing a neuroma from developing.

I would go see a foot doc. I had Morton's a couple of times. Solution was a custom foot bed built to relieve pressure where the nerve entrapment was. I could still run on it and it eventually went away. I also think mine was caused by having too tight of shoes. Good luck!

Yep. I also use toe stretchers and that helped some. Mine hit when Mizuno changed up the Inspires a couple of shoes back. They have sense corrected the issue and with a different foot bed I have been able to run some, but have had to really back off because I still will irritate it running outdoors. I also find that keeping my lower legs rolled out and loose helps to stop of the issue. It sucks.

Exactly the same for me except I only had it bad once.

So you're folding the tape over then cutting two notches in to -- to make holes for your toes to fit through? Interesting. I'll try it.

I just don't want this to be some chronic thing I'm always having to worry about.

And once you got over it you never had it again? That's what I'm hoping for.

Not very sore today, but can feel it. Going to bike instead of run today. Hope to get a longish run in tomorrow -- we'll see.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll try to keep running on it if I'm not going to damage myself further.

I guess I'd better find a sports-oriented foot doc in the East Bay.

Never got it bad where it kept me from running and feels like my sock is stuffed up under the ball of my foot. Every once in a while, I can feel the nerve buzz a little, but then the next run it's gone. If you have a local running club, maybe ask someone for a podiatrist recommendation.

The purple rectangle is a piece of KT (kinesio) tape folded in half. It comes on pre-cut strips.... you fold it in half and then cut the triangle holes in the middle. Peel the back off and slide your 3rd and 4th toes through the hole and secure the tape Another piece of tape is then wrapped around the ball of the foot, perpendicular to the first piece.

If you go to KT Tape's website, they have a video on how to do this.

X2.

Cathy and I both appreciate this as we share this problem in common.
