Magnolia Masters Workout Live
With Ironman Texas almost here, Magnolia Masters will broadcast workouts live on Facebook as we prepare these final two weeks.

The first workout will be Tuesday May 3 at 7am - 8am (central time). The second work for this week will be Friday May 6 at 7am - 8am. I'll give commentary on the workout and what we are trying to accomplish and answer any questions any one has on this thread.

The pros on the Magnolia Masters team racing IMTX that will be in the water tomorrow will be:

Matt Hanson
Balazs Csoke
Lisa Roberts
Liz Baugher

In addition there will be some other pros that are swimming with the team in the lead up to IMTX as well as some very competitive age groupers.

You can find the Magnolia Masters Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/magnoliamasters

Again, happy to answer any questions about the workout tomorrow and please post your questions on this thread.

Great idea!

What I'd like to see is something which would let us gauge the intensity of effort relative to their speed. i.e. if someone is a 4:15 400m swimmer, doing 50 repeats holding 33's is very different than a 5:00 swimmer holding 33's.

Is there any way to do that before the workout starts, along with a brief synopsis of what the day is supposed to achieve?

Also, can I tune in later if I can't see the live feed?

Here's the times for the last couple of swims for some of the athletes:

Balazs
IM Budapest 70.3 - 23:44 (1st out of the water)
IM Chattanooga - 40:48 (1st out of the water)
IM Malaysia - 49:10 (1st out of the water

Matt
IM Panama 70.3 - 23:57
IM New Zealand - 51:34
IM Oceanside 70.3 - 26:24

The design of that sets are such that I'm pushing the athlete to hold a pace that is a stretch for the given number of repeats that day. So we wouldn't really bump up against what you are describing.

Yes, the video will be saved up on the page. We'll get to see how well the technology works that Facebook is using.

Just finished watching, up here in Toronto!! Absolutely, loved it. Great idea!!

Quick Question, if you don't mind. I've noticed a lot of Triathletes at our pool swim with Pull Buoy's for extended periods of time. What's your thoughts on swimming with Pull Buoy's?

Thx

Just watched (well, mostly listened as I'm doing real work at the same time).

Thanks for that, looking forward to the next one.

Just curious, do you have them do any stroke work? Or all free?

Thanks for checking in. Glad you liked it.

Pull buoys and triathletes are pretty common. In general, especially for triathletes learning to improve in the swim, it's probably one of the worst things you can do. It allows the athlete to swim without having to engage the core and doesn't push the athlete to get to the best body position without the use of extra floatation. If all you are racing are wetsuits swims then go for it. But if you want to learn how to swim drop the buoy and swim.

Again, thanks for checking in and if you want me to highlight or include anything in the next one, let me know.

Most of them don't have a swim background, they only compete in freestyle, we aren't doing an obnoxious amount of volume, we don't have a lot of time in the water so I use all the time we've got to work on freestyle. I'll throw in some backstroke when we are doing more yardage like at the January camp, but we focus on freestyle.

Glad you enjoyed it. If there is anything else you would want to see or highlighted during the workout, let me know and I'll try to work it into the next one.

I thought it was funny that someone nicked up TJ fry out of the blue. TJ: apparently you haven't been swimming enough according to some guy who shows up looking for you!

I enjoyed watching it...

Hi Tim, One more quick question? Choosing a correct hold time? Whats your thought process on choosing the hold time for an athlete.

What kind of yardage will you have have your athletes do a week out from an IM vs what their normal yardage in a day would be?

A week out not much will change. We are doing some fine tuning, but the yardage is staying about the same. In swimming, since it is so low impact, there isn't much of a "taper" involved especially for distance swimmers and then triathletes aren't really putting in enough volume to begin with. There isn't much to taper off of.

I hope this helps.

There's the $64k question. I'm looking at how they are swimming that morning, where we are in the season, what they have been doing and then thinking how much do I think I can get out of them on that set. I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but there isn't a strict formula. It's just my experience and looking at a lot of different variables.

Don't forget to check out the broadcast tomorrow from 7am - 8am (central time). We had a couple more pros roll into town so the practice has grown. Tomorrow morning will be a tough set. Leave a question on this thread or you can post directly onto the FB page during the broadcast and I'll answer during the practice.

Another Excellent broadcast Tim!! Really enjoyed it!! Cool to watch the varying techniques of each of the Pro's. Especially at the beginning of the set and how it changed near the end, under what I'm sure was heavy fatigue.

Great tip near the end about not trying to tempo up. I fall victim to that too many times to count. I start to fatigue and lose my mind trying to get to the wall on time and things get way outta control and the stroke speeds up but I don't go any faster. LOL most likely a lot slower…

Looking forward to the next one!!

Thx Again!!

Is there some point when you'll start to evaluate whether there might be some value in a broader range of work in various energy zones for triathletes? Is there a chance that the "all-intensity-all-the-time-except-taper" methodology might lead to stagnation? What would be a sign of stagnation that you'd look for in your swimmers?

I evaluate the way I coach all the time.

I don't think I've said "all-intensity-all-the-time-except-taper." I keep the intensity high even through the taper. The reduction is in volume and not intensity.

No, I don't see much value in placing that much emphasis on working in various "energy zones" and if you do then you don't know much about where efficiency in swimming comes from.

I think triathlon training, whether it be intensity or volume, can lead to stagnation. It's a good coach that knows how to work around it.

For recognizing stagnation in swimmers, I would refer you to the third definition - http://www.dictionary.com/browse/stagnation

Hope this helps,

Tim
