"I'm going to smash him. I look at my strengths and I look at his strengths and, unfortunately, Lance, I'm better than you," the dual world champion, 39, said.

Days when the conditions make the swim and bike slower appear to be days when the run is faster; and vice versa.

Macca is talking about racing IM, what is your boy's experience so far?

I'm still lost, what is the point you are trying to make by posting this? Lance broke his record, and that is great. Records are meant to be broken. Are you trying to imply that Lance is a better triathlete than Macca or that Lance will beat Macca?

He has about 50k + miles of racing on the bike.. A junior elite triathlon background... the best coaches/facilities/technology/research available to him, and mentally just as confident as Macca.. So lets at least call it close before you call his boy a newb. Gonna be a battle and yea Macca will pass him at mile 25 on Alii but if you dont get more goosebumps watching this race than any other IM something's wrong.. my 2 cents at least.

And to reply to my own comment here.. much bigger fan of Macca (which is why i hope he passes him at mile 25) since I have had the privilege of meeting both in a social and a race environment.. I still will never forget when I was setting up transition at IMAZ 2008 and Macca was there to watch Ambrose and I asked him why he was there and his reply was, "Didn't you know I flew all the way from OZ to watch you race mate?" Probably the best thing to hear as a 20 y/o before his 1st IM even though its total nonsense of course... Dude is a class act and knows the right balance between class/cocky.

When Lance has done an IM we can have a sensible conversation, but to make estimates based on 70.3 performances is silly.

I'm not sure if we can even make estimates then. A lot of guys have had great IM performances, only to come to Kona and fall flat on their face. Not saying this will happen to Lance, because obviously the guy has a lot of experience, and a lot of resources at his disposal, but Kona is a different animal.

You are right, but we will have more of a basis to form an opinion. If he comes off the bike and runs a 4 hour marathon then some of the hysteria may die down. I'm not saying he will, but at the moment no one has any idea of how he will do in an IM.

So the swim was short and the bike was wind aided and this proves what exactly? Lance is a total stud and so is Macca but your chart and talking about course records in triathlon are just silly.

When Macca set the record I doubt that he "meant" for it to be broken. It probably represented the best he had on that particular day -- when he was in his prime years. Lance's new record may not say very much about how he'll do at 140.6, but it trivializes the achievement to say that records are "meant" to be broken. They aren't, though of course sometimes they are broken anyhow.

He won by like 4 minutes that day, and essentially had the fastest splits in all 3 disciplines, I wouldn't agree that it represents "the best he had on that particular day". And, I'm sorry, but most athletes would say that records are meant to be broken, and, I don't think that most of these guys are even trying to break a record, they are simply trying to win.

My point is that Macca's Hawaii 70.3 record was achieved on an easy day. Lance broke it on a hard day.

And also that days when the conditions make the swim and bike slower appear to be days when the run is faster; and vice versa.

No, you clearly do not understand. You can't simply just mean what you say. There must be at least one ulterior motive. And likely several...

How do you know it was a hard day? Take Chris Lieto, he has raced Honu numerous times and last weekend was by far his fastest bike ever and its not like Lance destroyed him on the bike. There was a substantial cross tailwind coming back, if you could handle your bike in the wind it was a very fast bike course this year.

But ... In each case, they were both RACING the event. There was no incentive to set a record.

1st place is all that counts .. And they both got first.

If they were each COMPETING to set a world record, then you could compare conditions to fetermine who was best. But they weren't.

That chart doesn't show that it was a hard day, I would say that it shows the exact opposite. It shows that it was the fastest bike ever and to roughly the tune of about 6-7 minutes. Unless I am reading it wrong. Also I was on the Queen K on race day so I do have an idea on what the conditions were like and there was also a loose buoy on the swim which seemed to shorten the swim slightly.

Ok so I am looking at your chart and trying to figure it out, is it an average from the whole field? If that is the case I think what you have here is just what I said in my 1st reply. Fast people who can handle there bikes went really fast on Sat. but the avg. was brought down by all the masses of inexperienced riders. There was a handful of people at the pointy end of this race who all went faster than they ever have before. It just goes to show that you can't compare even the same race over different years there are just to many variables.

When you compare the same time trial course, done on different days, with similar equipment, do you compare average speed or power?

Depends on what I want to learn but sooner or later I look at something related to power-to-drag.
