I like cliff bars but they are so high in sugar. Anyone know of any better options?

Larabars for the win. They have 3-4 ingredients typically and no added sugar. And they are cheap. Now they even have protein bars. Larabar ALT bars. They just released a new ALT bar: chocolate peanut butter. It's the best thing ever and I'm not exaggerating.

I like to go with Oskri bars. The plain coconut one's a tasty bar and good for long endurance rides/runs.

Try the UCAN bar. It is really good and only has 5g of sugar.

There's also Ominbar:

I have never tried them, but one of the founders is a friend of mine, so I thought I would put in a plug for them here.

make yourself some all-natural 40-30-30 bars courtesy of rick Denney's legendary recipe. I've been riding on these things for years, and there's nothing better:

Kind Bars: http://www.kindsnacks.com/store/types/nuts-spices. The 'nuts and spices' line has 4-5 g of sugar for around 200 calories depending which one you get. The other lines have more sugar, some as much as 11 g so be sure to read the label.

Check out http://thunderbirdbar.com/products.html hazelnut heart bar is the best.

No added sugars or anything for that matter. The thunderbird line has sugar due to dates and dried fruit but the gather line is very low sugar.

Larabars look to have almost same sugars as clif, but less calories.

I'm comparing chocolate chip bars.

The founder is also a friend of mine, and I have tested in races (IM TX for example). It's a very different taste from any other bar I have tried, and for me it works.

I might be missing something here. If this is for consumption *whilst on the bike* what's the problem with sugar?

Maybe what you're looking for isn't a a bar. This is savory, and easy to carry.

I tried two of the new Clif Bar squeeze packets this weekend on a 93-mile ride and was very impressed by the taste and texture. It's not a bar, of course, but it's organic. The savory flavors don't have much sugar. I tried the Pizza Margherita flavor and the Sweet Potato with Sea Salt. Both were really good.

Full disclosure, I'm one of their sponsored athletes, but I wouldn't recommend these if I didn't like them.

I was thinking the same thing. Sugar's exactly what you need during training!

+1 Many of the alternative recommendations here contain a high % of fat which may be tasty but seems unnecessary as an energy source.

So why are bagels or toast with almond/peanut butter the go to pre race meal for several athletes? You're telling me healthy fats serve no purpose for longer distance fuel?

Even the skinniest triathlete is not fat limited in regards to competing several IMs while everyone is carbohydrate limited for races out beyond a couple hours. Ingested fat slows stomach emptying and provides you with nothing that your body doesn't already have in great supply.

YMMV,

The bagels and toast have carbs. The fat is just for taste and of little or no value unless you're going to the South Pole or something where they eat butter for fuel.

My thought exactly. If this is for ride fuel, you kinda do want the sugar...

Many people don't want to eat foods with added sugar. Nothing wrong with that. I personally don't find candy bars on the bike very satisfying.

OTOH, Feed Zone Portable bacon, egg, and rice bars? Heaven.

Bacon and eggs as ride fuel doesn't sound terribly useful. You aren't going to gain much benefit from filling your belly with protein. Not entirely sure what the fear is about "added sugar". Fueling endurance training and "losing weight" are not exactly compatible endeavors.

Yeah I tried those rice portable things. Didn't work for me. I had rice everywhere before the end of the ride. On my face, on my jersey, on my glasses. Sticky little bugger rice is.
