Hey- I have summers off with my line of work (high school teacher), and I am wondering if anyone has recommendations for a destination tri or marathon.

Thanks.

Do you have a general area that you are interested in? I was talking to someone recently who is trying to get his wife to sign up for a race in Australia so he has an excuse to go there.

Alp D'Huez triathlon. Did it this weekend and it was really something. They have both a short and long course. Very professionally run with great accommodations in the area. I'll be there again next year

Here is one a bit off the standard triathlon map. We were just in Poznan for the Challenge event about 10 days ago - very cool place. Nothing like what I had expected, such a nice old downtown, and great restaurants/bars. Hotels good, extremely cheap. Very well organised event, and next year it is the ETU Long Distance Champs. Will have a revamped route with a finish right downtown in the beautiful square.
Disclaimer: We work with Challenge on their events worldwide. Having said that, this location is incredibly beautiful.

A teacher friend did this race in Utah last year.

Not a marathon, but she did say it was the most challenging 50K she has done.

Geneva and rent a car or Paris then train and shuttle. I personally did the long distance and flew to Paris and took a train (~50€).

Great race, I definitely recommend the long if you can train for it, it is by far the most challenging course I have done so far.

Let me know if I can help -

I've actually done alpe d'huez. You can fly into Lyon or Paris. I flew into Paris, and then took the train and bus. I wrote a long race report you can find here that chronicles how to get there and such: http://savagesentiments.blogspot.com/...race-report.html?m=1

Thank you and Datscha. Definitely a race worth considering. However, I will never fly into Charles DeGaulle again. It has to be one of the worst airports in Europe. Plus, you never know what the strike of the month is going to be!

OP, I also took the fly to Paris-train to Lyon-bus to BdO approach, and I suppose the most notable thing is that I had done zero logistics planning prior to getting off the plane in Paris, which included lodging for 4-5 days in BdO before meeting some friends in AdH with an apartment.

My trip home involved hitchhiking with all my shit from AdH to Lyon, which was considerably more nerve-wracking.

Oh, and the race is epic.

I guess a suitable "destination race" can be dependent on where you set the bar. Your profile says you're in CA, so maybe something on the other coast and off the beaten path might suit your destination needs.

There's the Bay of Fundy international marathon. I haven't done it, but it looks like it could be an interesting trip. It might be easier getting to Europe than getting to this race.

Didn't challenge Roth sell out in like 30 seconds this year? :-/ How do people even get into it? It's certainly in the "dream race" file for me, but getting into it seems rather impossible.

I'd suggest IMLP (gorgeous, fun event, cool place to do other stuff as well) or Challenge Penticton.
