Lightweight bike lock
Yes, I'm looking for lightweight lock knowing it will not do much to deter a serious thief. What is the lightest weight, easiest to carry lock?

Here is the deal. I bought a Velosurance policy to cover me in the case crash damage to my bike. As a bonus, the insurance also comes with theft coverage, but coverage only kicks in if the bike is locked. I am comfortable leaving my bike outside a coffee shop, etc unlocked for a few minutes and have done so without incident for years. But I thought if I could get something light and easy to carry that qualified as a "lock" I could take advantage of my included theft insurance. I'm not interested doing battle with a determined thief, just setting myself up to a) deter a complete amateur and/or b) get coverage if some determined thief does take my bike while I am ordering a latte. Ideas?

In fairly safe situations I use this tiny retractable cable lock: http://www.rei.com/...cable-snowboard-lock
It's only good for foiling the most amateur thief, but often that's enough.

My girlfriend bought this and loves it: https://tigrlock.com/

The guy at the LBS told us about it and how it's very secure. It's pretty light and easy to carry on your bike. It was over $100 though if I recall.

You can buy a simple master combination cable lock at most hardware stores for 5 or 7 dollars. Basically the price of a latte.

Not as secure as the guys at TgirLock would have you believe:

Go to 0´39".

It´s basically expensive junk.

::EDIT:: the 32mm version is apparently OK, that´s the 19mm version on the vid.

That wasn't fair! She had a universal key.

.

+1. That's exactly what I use for securing the bike in pretty safe places.

This is what I have for locking up my bike at early morning Masters, suburban office parks, and county park trailheads. It takes up less than a whole jersey pocket.

Damn. Okay, bad recommendation. That was insanely easy

It’s not quite as simple as that German video would have you believe. Yes, the 0.75” wide versions of the TiGr Lock can be cut with bolt cutters, like many (if not most) other locks. For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiWCHzH2xEA

However, unlike every cable lock we tested, the 0.75” TiGr Locks can’t be cut easily with wire cutters, or tin snips, or easily pried open with a lever or tapped open with a hammer. For more information on how we think about security testing please see here: https://tigrlock.com/lock-testing/

The 1.25” wide TiGr Locks can’t be cut easily with a bolt cutter. The folks who made this video really wanted to prove us wrong on that point, but were unable to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oz8v7J9GKw

In response to the original question, TiGr Locks are light compared to other locks and can be very easy to carry. The TiGr Locks (125 versions) are the lightest ART certified locks with a level 2 (or higher) rating, and the only ART certified device that is able to secure both wheels and frame to a bike rack without having to remove a wheel. Here’s the link to the complete/current list of ART certified locks: http://www.stichtingart.nl/sloten_resultaat.asp

All that said, any lock is better than no lock. Thanks for the interest in our products. We were happy to see some traffic from this discussion. Please send us a note if you want to talk: info@tigrlock.com

Happy Riding!
