If I was Boardman I'd be disappointed with that, they focus their marketing on tri rather than roadies so I would have expected there to be more.

Curious how the Canyon count compares with next year!

the FLO guys put their numbers on Fb. 80 wheels. 41 last year.

adding one question:
i wonder what model Cannondale? they are a good company but their two recent offerings have been mixed.

Argon's jump is pretty impressive considering the new E-119 isn't out yet.

I bet Canyon's numbers will jump a lot if they are able to sell in the US.

I noticed that too, would never have put them as 5th most popular.

My bet is that Canyon go 200+ next year and outstrip all but Cervelo, Trek, and possibly Spesh.

Some funky numbers in there. For example, under power meters it says Garmin - 222 yet under pedals it says Garmin Vector - 236

Good number for a company with almost no retail outlets. Shows what a new company can do with some specific consumer direct marketing and sponsorships.

No way Canyon will have 200+ bikes next year, mathematically that just doesn't work. BTW, it's funny how LAVA uses the same intro text every year, with "Cervelo dominating the count but others closing in", regardless of whether the gap actually decreases or increases (as it did this year).

Seems high.

Why don't you think it works mathematically?

An extra 150 isn't a big stretch when you consider the demand in countries that Canyon don't currently sell in, but will start doing so in a few months.
The new Canyon owners would be selling/replacing bikes from Trek etc so it's definitely doable.

1500 bikes on the pier next year will be the same ones as this year. So from the remainder, the ones that will be replaced, they would need an enormous market share. Anything is possible, but that is a tough ask.

Does anyone know the country distribution of the athletes. Is it still USA biased or more even now?

Mostly asking regarding to what brands you can find in different countries.

I've done the Kona Bike Count a few times - both the old school way when we were allowed on the pier after check in and the new way where we sit outside the fence as the athletes stream past. The new way is very inaccurate. There's a lot of guessing going on with the bits and pieces like pedals and even group sets as there are often a blend of components. Aerobars of often the hardest to count as athletes come though with lots of stuff balanced on their front ends, covering the set up.

The helmet numbers were interesting.

I spotted at least 544 bad decisions just glancing at the helmet #'s.

Because most people at Kona are racing a bike they have had for a few years. Probably less than 1/3 are are on a bike less than a year old. So you are suggesting an extra ~8% of athletes at Kona will be on Canyon next year (the 150 number). So that actually means 24% of the Kona athletes that buy a bike next year will be buying Canyons. That looks optimistic.

There's a bit of turnover among attendees, so that needs to be factored in, but you're correct.

On the other hand, after today's bike leg, I see a lot of people putting in orders for Canyons.

490 of the 1855 qualification slots are given to races in the US. In addition there are another 240 slots for Mexico and Canada. So it is likely that bike brands available in the US will continue to dominate the Kona bike count.

So yes it still is very biased towards the USA.

Dimond had the fastest bike split today. By that logic, people should be ordering Dimonds

Wing 57? Rudy is everywhere here. I went and bought an sworks tt lid from a shop here- however there was not a lot of specialised presence here. In terms of consumer outlets etc. I guess, to be fair, most of it all was clothing apparel as far as outlets go.

As for the cannondales I saw quite a number of the newer slices and no Rs. Of course there would be some, however the new slice was quite popular.
Treks and cervelos were by far the most popular and it seems the tally reflects that

Rudy is everywhere because they discount their helmets so much. The only reason they win every year is because of this
