One day we told the football boys, when they were small, that our neighbor was an olympic swimmer from Helsinki 1952 or '54. They didn't believe that the old man with liver spots, who smoked like a chimney and hacked like a cat with hairballs, and drank like a fish, could even get up the driveway to get the paper. We then showed them a picture of Dick Cleveland at the Helsinki Olympics, looking like a bronzed teenaged god. Even I had a hard time believing it was the same person. He died a few years ago from cancer. I don't think he swam much after his Olympic years, told us he hated the water, too much aversion to cold.

This is a pretty accurate depiction of U.S. culture.

You think that guy looks like me? His nose is too big.

Sadly, untrue in my case. I have a small nose and, well, suffice it to say what does not get used shrivels and dies.

And that has been the best decision I have made in a long, long, long time.
