Katie Compton's season ends...

...with an injury from a disc rotor in a crash.

Warning: Don't look at pic at bottom of the article if squeamish:

As RChung likes to say, if only there was an objective way to assess the risk for this :-/

HAs anyone actually seen evidence this was caused by a rotor? Just asking

Bummer, she had an incredible season. I think she already had the overall wrapped up in the DVV regardless of the outcome of this race.

Disc brakes aren't going away in CX/MTB. It time for people to stop complaining and wishing for the good 'ol days of poor stopped power.

She finished 7th today, with that injury and a shoe change.

Nasty injury. Can't believe she finished so well all things considered.

Someday I'm going to convince you to stand in the pit with a spare shoe for me just so I can say I got a shoe change midrace.

And so it begins again...

About 2 cm lateral to her current cut she has a well-healed linear wound that looks like it would have looked a lot like her current injury when fresh (making some suppositions).

Was this also caused by a rotor?

I have no intention of switching to disk brakes and I have no horse in this race.... but it seems like disk rotors are being blamed for a lot of injuries that are pretty similar to injuries that happened before disk brakes were common.

This one looks more plausible - right knee to rear rotor of bike in front. Still quite difficult to hit a disc that way without other parts of you and your bike hitting the rider in front first, and you should still end up with a load of spoke scrapes on the outside of your leg. Wasn't convinced by the Ventoso injury - there I think he fell into a wheel that was still moving forward slowly and the rear spokes moving upwards happened to cut into him.

You think CX is going back to rim brakes? What about mountain? Do they have to as well?

I would pay just about anything for that joke to be put to rest.

For good reason, though, right? I remember one "disc rotor" injury that had suspicious looking tooth marks all along the edge of the cut.

Also your subject line seems to imply it was a "season-ending injury" when really it was just her last race of the season, which she finished.

Unlike Ventoso who had the crash and laceration at Paris-Roubaix that started this all, Compton wasn’t surrounded by dozens of riders going 45+ kph when she crashed. I would imagine that she would then have a more accurate recollection of what happened.

She could still be wrong about what cut her knee, but I think she has a greater chance of being right.

Not to mention this ”season ending injury” requires a total of couple dozen stitches & few weeks rest before resuming training

Yeah..."tooth" marks on an ~1" pitch? I seem to recall that opinion was put forth by an industry-paid "expert" who had only seen photos posted on the internet :-/

I hear you on the "season ending". It wasn't clear to me from the cycling news article that this was her last race anyway. I found that out from her tweet.

That's not the point. The point is whether or not it's a good idea to have more of them in an event with higher speeds, closer racing, and higher likelihood of crashes involving multiple riders...and for arguable reasons (not really an overall performance improvement).

Hey, I personally thought these safety concerns for road racing were a bit overblown...but, we're starting to see more and more cases of possible injuries. This happens to be a case from CX, which is where many have pointed to as an example asking "why isn't it happening there?" Did you notice the link in the article to another pro CX disc injury back October? Sounds like she crashed solo?

It will be interesting to see what happens as even more disc-equipped bikes are raced in pro road racing.

Why so quick to blame the rotor/ After all mountain biking's been racing with them for years.

Trust me I’m a doctor!

Definitely not blaming, but is there not a way to cover them as well and potentially make them safer.

Curious how a rounded disc makes a cut like that. Unless the discs they're using aren't rounded.

Looks like a rock cut to me, seen plenty exactly like that doing MTB.
She may not have seen the rock in the mud and assumed the rotor.

I'm waiting for video evidence to see the crash.
