Just got a Bimmer (BMW) Bike
I was a bit burnt from riding so much, I had to use the car for a few days - which was "driving" me nutz. So I started to look at E-bikes as a recovery ride so to speak. Spotted this thing on C/L, took it for a spin tonite it's seriously bad-a$$. Bought it. It's a medium frame, has a long top tube but the seat tube is short. I have few cm before min insert. Dropped the bars with the adjustable stem, moved the seat back, hit the marks I need to hit.

It works kind of like a Gruber assist. The motor augments your pedaling, but in reality despite the heft, pedal effort was so light it was a joke. I was laughing, its like warping physics, the motor is very quiet, power is seamless and brakes are sublime. Under zero power it's not too bad either. It just feels like a cruiser bike. Settings are ECO, Normal, Sport and Turbo boost. 80km range or 50 mi should get me a round trip. Battery detaches to charge.

Quite impressed and was lady driven (BMW employee). Rare too- 1st I've seen. Hmm do you think anyone will rat me out if I rack it in transition?

I think you should put some accessories on there.

Thanks for posting a pix of your commuter. It must get you a lot of looks & conversation. There could be an idea or two to decorate the BMW for sure.

You know (seriously) I was looking for spot to clothes-hanger-clip a vintage 1969 Bobby Orr hockey card so that it drums in the spokes :).

Does it have the annoying i-Drive that my bimmer has?

No i-drive, The ubiquitous euro Bosch Pedelec with 25 km/h assist limit. I got the bike to 52 km/h on human power. Without the assist it's no aero bullet of course.

Climbs and starts are like a rocket in Turbo mode.

But the speed assist cut-off is nasty. Fortunately I found a USB plug in/wiring kit for $120 from Germany - also on Ebay

I don't think you see to many of them because you can only buy them at BMW dealerships and, well, who goes to a car dealership to buy a bike :)

My lbs sells these (Germany) they are not BMW branded I think they are Giant. They look exactly the same though.
They are expensive so I hope you got a good deal!

I got too good of a deal - unfortunate that the seller was needing to send $ back to her family in South America. I didn't know what it was worth and told her I didn't want to see the sales receipt, because I brought what I could part with and that was it. Deal done.

Anyway back to the bike, stats from the first ride yesterday: 61km, 25km/h avg, 70.3 km/h top speed :), and ~20% power left in the pack. My legs were fresh for an evening run but my body still felt the effects due to being in the riding posture. Despite being a tank it is not a smooth ride. The front suspension is useless, better off with a carbon fork. The big tires do nothing to smooth things out - disappointed in that dept - lots of road vibration via the stiff frame. Handling dynamics are good. The front handle bar I don't like either, this bent thing. So going to have to race it out somehow, starting with my own custom made seat, and find a spot for water!

The Bosch electric drive is really good, and the electronics are easy to use on the fly, no complaints there. And oddly it has a momentum to it, really strange but perhaps because of the heavy wheels, it seems to feel like it's rolling by itself. I kept looking at the meter, and yet there was no boost.

Instead of coming from a mountain or commuter bike "style", somebody needs to build a proper quality road bike with less assistance, and more distance capability. Probably no market for it (of course).

But then these guys, what frig is this? <http://www.m55-bike.com/

Too hot to handle (BMW) Bike [SharkFM] [ In reply to ]

The "Recharger" is too hot to handle now :)

Chipped it on the weekend so it's unlimited, new Flite saddle, handle bar, and got a cool rack for the back. Of course gearing it spins out making the max speed no more than 50 km/h. In this riding position the aero drag/wind noise becomes huge, so to sustain say a 50 km/h I would need aero bars - which I might get actually.

OK - what does an E-bike do for a triathlete? Same thing a treadmill or pull buoy does. The benefits of spinning over time without the peak loads you would normally get. I think also it's a bit of a wind tunnel - it's a shame this couldn't be used to tune up an aero position.

The benefits of spinning

Could you explain this? I can't see how that would have any benefit at all to becoming a better cyclist.

I definitely got behind one of these battery-powered ebikes last week! I was in my full roadie kit, and was cranking along at 230 watts on a flat, which is generally fast enough to pass all non-drop bar cyclists, yet right ahead of me was a guy in noncycling clothes, no clips, on a flat bar bike, going just as fast.

Then we hit a short hill, and I hit 400 watts for a good 20-30 seconds, and he stayed ahead of me the full way, never looking like he was even working hard.

I passed him and heard a fine humming buzz that I think was the battery, but it put up some oomph!

I'll do my best to explain "the feeling" and it's surprised me.

First I have a bit of a problem riding a bike, in that I tend to ride all out. Having to be somewhere or invariably a bit of street race going on...

I've gotten to the point where putting in 4 or 5 consecutive days of commuting is tough (~200+miles), needing weekends for rehabbing.

So with the E-bike, legs can spin freely, speed is still there so that satisfies the mind. And although I am not slam dunking calories the legs and back feel great as if O2 charged blood is circulating as it should without hammering the muscle groups. So it truly becomes a bit of a "recharge" ride, especially in the higher commuter positioning.
