Very cool! Love it when old folks show age is just a number and nothing more.

Great, now there's 12 ways to get to Kona!?! Unbelievable.

[Copied the 11 from the article here. For full descriptions of each please use the link above.)
1. Standard qualification:
2. Qualify in China:
3. IRONMAN Legacy Program:
4. IRONMAN Kona Drawing benefiting The IRONMAN Foundation:
5. Physically Challenged Open/Exhibition Division Drawing: .
6. IRONMAN Foundation annual Kona auction:
7. Women For Tri slots.
8. IRONMAN Executive Challenge
9. Bonus Kona slots
10. Japan to Whistler to Kona
11. IRONMAN 70.3 Hawaii, Honu to Kona
12. Be an icon of the sport and perhaps the reason there's still a Kona to go to in the first place (race wise) and get invited

End pink.

Edit: Pretty awesome she decided to skip number 12 and win her way there. Good for her.

Also note that every former Kona winner can return to Kona for life as an age grouper after their 5 year pro auto qual (with validation) runs out. Ex, Thomas Hellriegel would be able to go to Kona for life as an age grouper. Same with Peter Reid and same with Kathleen McCartney (who beat Julie Moss at Ironman Feb 1982...I believe this one was in Oahu, not Kona). Julie Moss needs to qualify like the rest of us.

Edit: 1982, the Feb and Oct editions were both in Kona.

Hello Gmehje and All,

Kathleen McCartney is planning on racing Kona this year also ... perhaps Mike Levine will too .. 'Anything Is Possible'

A rerun of the Kathleen and Julie matchup finish?

Mike was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer about a year ago and is a survivor on 'chemo light'.

His motto is 'Strive To Survive'. I have ridden with him recently and he noted that after his chemo treatment if he does a hard workout his chemo symptoms are mitigated by the exercise ...... which runs counter intuitive to what one might think.

Mike has done about 100 plus triathlon races.

I am wishing him well in his training working up to a possible Kona slot.

Cheers, Neal

Is Kathleen using clause number 12 to go back to Kona or exercise her perpetual invite under clause number 13 as a former race winner? I think Julie is going to kick her ass since Julie went straight through the front door in 10:46 using the preferred clause number 1 in this thread!

Hello devashish_paul and All,

Don't know the answer to your question ... but as a former Ironman World Champion I suppose she can take her pick of clauses.

And as in most contests .... 'ya pays your money and takes your chances' .... as to where you place in the finish.

I would guess that Kathleen will gather more ink and do more good from supporting pancreatic cancer than from her placing in the Kona race.

I think the big problem, is the race is really 3 events. It is an invitational event, not just a World Championship:

1) Pro World Championship
2) AG World Championship
3) An iconic Ironman event where the participant is a live spectator or item #1&2.

About 3/4 of those that legitimately qualify, including pros, are just participants and aren't even really racing for a top 5 placing anyway.

I'm not sure why everyone makes a big deal about changing or opening up slots for non-competitive participants.

I'm guessing JM effectively has a celebrity slot for Kona for life. That being said, she is a former pro who (as we see) is quite capable of KQ.

I was making fun of the other thread. She should be there any time she wants to go. I also have no problem with celebrity slots or any of the other slots.
