so all it will take is some rumors to be investigated and an athlete will be barred? what if someone got tired of chrissie winning everything and decided to drum up some rumors? would she be banned as well? seems like an unfair and backwards policy to me.

If USAT denied Sam McGlone her pro card this year because she took 2011 off from racing, will they do the same for Chrissie? Between WTC and USAT I'm just a little tired of it all. I'm selling a bike to buy a stand up paddle board...

Chrissie's pro card comes from British Triathlon not USAT.

What has USAT got to do with Chrissie...She isn't American!!

Yes, I realize that! Sam is Canadian and from reading her tweets yesterday she seemed a little upse that USAT denied her card. Even though she gets her pro card from the Canadian governing body. If it didn't affect her somehow I doubt she would have even mentioned it.

Can they televise the USADA hearings? Maybe NBC?

Dan, correct me if I am wrong. Didn't ST do an interview with the head of WTC and he stated that they negotiated with Lance while is was under criminal investigation. Perhaps you can post the link to that interview.

ETA: http://www.slowtwitch.com/..._Armstrong_2570.html

ST: Were you waiting for the Federal prosecutors to abandon their case against Lance before making this announcement? Did the disposition of that case have any bearing on the timing of this agreement?

Andrew: No -- and none whatsoever. We have been negotiating this for months and months. The timing of the close of the Federal investigation had no impact. Certainly we had no insight about that. We were waiting until after the Super Bowl to make sure Lance could find time to announce it.

I think the fact that every story published currently seems to be about LA might be the issue. Four out of the last seven or eight? Something like that anyway.

A pro cyclist being investigates for doping is hardly news. Olds maybe.

That said, the sheer volume of replies would seem to indicate interest from some quarters so ......

i don't remember whether i did that or not. i would have to find it the same way as you: via a search of the site.

but as i recall, the announcement of lance racing ironman almost exactly coincided with the dropping of charges by the u.s. attorney's office. i mean, within a very few days. if one assumes that lance's team knew about this prior to the official announcement by the u.s. attorney, then i suspect the deal with wtc was done and announced when it was in some measure because they knew the end of the investigation was forthcoming.

USAT ELITE MEMBERSHIP QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Elite Foreign License

This license is for foreign athletes who compete in multiple USAT sanctioned events and want to avoid paying the $9 one day license fee multiple times. This license costs $39 and expires December 31 of the year in which it was issued.

Qualification criteria: Any athlete who chooses to compete as a foreign elite athlete must present proof of elite status from his/her National Triathlon Federation.

"I think the fact that every story published currently seems to be about LA might be the issue. Four out of the last seven or eight?"

in normal circumstances, i'd agree. had wtc not decided to make an about face thursday night, and revisit its policy, with as its end a change in armstrong's status, allowing him to race, i'd not have written any more about it. but, that seemed to me pretty newsworthy. wtc was within a hair's breadth of reinstating him. in fact, yesterday i wrote three stories: lance is back in; lance is definitely out; and the one i ended up publishing, which was, lance's status has gone from out to 50/50. that's how yesterday went. then there was wtc's board meeting last night and the outcome. which i wrote about this morning.

which of those two stories published yesterday and today should i have not written?

or was it the, "ban, what ban?" story you think i should not have published on slowtwitch. the very first story i see, when google lance armstrong, is, "lance armstrong banned from triathlon." which is not the case. do you think correcting this wide misconception this was not a worthy effort?

good get. i don't know that i 100 percent believe that. that seems very suspicious timing. nevertheless, i ask the questions, i print the answers.

i think it should be noted that under wtc's policy, the u.s. attorney's investigation was not a doping investigation, per se. that would not fall under the policy that has enjoined armstrong from racing now. had wtc decided to variously enforce that policy, depending on the individual involved, it certainly would not have enforced it now.

Don't know Dan, it just seems extremely odd to me that WTC negotiated with him while he was under criminal investigation for issues surrounding doping and now they suspend him because USADA is "looking into" investigating him.

WTC is going to lose money, at least in the short term, from this decision. Although I would like to find out more about why they decided to maintain current policy, I commend them for not quickly changing course to follow the money. I mourn for LA that he will not be able to pursue his dream this year and will really miss following his road to Kona in Oct., however, I think he will get the opportunity to cross the finish line on Alii Drive at some point in the future.

I also wonder how this WTC policy was vetted in LA's camp prior to his decision to link up with WTC this year. Seems like someone in LA's camp made an error in omission or judgment or there was a serious lack of communication with WTC regarding this policy and a possible charge from USADA.
