Is this a healthy breakfast? Quote | Reply

In the effort to improve my diet and lose some weight I am reducing the amount of red meat and increasing my consumption of fruits and vegetables. One of the things I have been doing for the last month is switching to a smoothie for breakfast instead of cereal or eggs. I was just wondering if this seemed like a healthy recipe for a bfast smoothie:

1. 1.5 cups of blueberries (for anti oxidants)
2. 2 cups of almond milk
3. 2 scoops of Muscle tech proteing whey
4. 0.5 cups of mango and pineapple

Optional stuff I occasionally add:
5 hour energy (I am gave up coffee for a bit)
1 banana

I am trying something similar prior to mooseman.

Mine is 1 scoop of Berry Vega, and one cup of mixed berries. LOTS of water in between meals...then salad and tuna lunch with Lemon wedge squeezed for lunch. Still drink black coffee.

I think your breakfast will help with your weight loss.....Good luck.

Hey Crusvegas,

I really don't count calories but just off the top of my head the whole shake is about 600-700 calories. 300 for the protein powder, 200 for the almond milk, 100 to 200 for the rest.

I live in Henderson, NV btw.

It is optional, out of the last two months I added 5hr twice but I gave up a 4 cup of coffee every morning habit.

Looks good, but skip the whey. For a number of reasons, it is not a good source of quality protein. Plus, there's this.

If this were a recovery shake...then maybe. But no need for breakfast.

For weight loss, i'd think it as bit heavy on the calorie count however it doesn't account for the intensity of your training.
Usually smaller meals throughout the day work better (like breaking up the 700 calories of the breakfast into two blocks of 400 at 7am and a 200-300 around 10 am)
I'd also drop or at least cut in half the whey protein.

And adding to the opinions here, if trying to improve health as well try to keep it natural and drop the 5 hr energy drink as well. Tea or coffee have similar effects.

Seems like too much to me unless you are doing a 3 hour ride before breakfast. This smoothie has roughly 60g of protein. Its questionable that you are even digesting all of that. Don't know the specifics of your protein powder, but 300 calories seems like I a lot for 40g of protein (2 scoops). I'd look for a powder that is just protein without any sugar additives since you are mixing it with fruit anyway.

I have to disagree on this one. Your breakfast should be at least 700 calories. If you are trying to lose weight, breakfast should be your largest meal of the day. You are correct on the smaller meals throughout the day, but you should chow down on a HEALTHY high calorie breakfast and then drop your calories each meal throughout the day...with dinner being the smallest (green veggies and lean meat).

First off kudos to you for getting the "lose" correct instead of the often used "loose".
Second, your smoothie recipe looks delicious but what is the matter with a small bowl of cereal with fruit. I'm not trying to be argumentative but I'm a cereal fanatic and I'm just curious why you cut it out.

Is that enough food to last you until lunch? Just wondering since I've never thought about going to a smoothie for a whole breakfast, lunch or dinner before. I would have to eat something right afterwards because it would feel too light and that would just ruin the point of the diet for me.

I've just been operating at a caloric deficit and the pounds just dropped. I would eat smaller portions and have little healthy snacks to hold me over until the next main medium sized meal (or gigantic meal if I just finished a hard or long ride). Went from 152 to 134 in 4-5ish months. Just SBR and eat a variety of things without overload unless a hard workout took place.

Thanks for the advice. It is true, this shake is a bit heavy for the intentions of weight loss and I should probably cut it in half and consume some in the late morning. I have not seen a huge weight loss but my recovery seems to be better and I have noticed my body seems slightly leaner. I am not sure about alternative protein sources other than Whey, I will have to do some research.

I agree. Another cereal fanatic here. It's hard to beat a bowl of homemade muesli or steal cut oats with fruit, nuts and seeds.

Is this whey protein in general, or this particular brand?

Overall reasonable and relatively clean.
I'd get off the 5 hour quick, chemicals are bad. Green tea?
I read somewhere in the Hammer literature that whey doses prior to bed aid in recovery, which I'll be trying this season. Haven't looked to verify that though.

I would suggest a breakfast of organic, slow cook oatmeal with fruit. And a whole grain bagel (plain) or whole grain toast (plain). I have that every morning. Its very healthy, very low fat and very filling. If you are training hard and eating right the weight should fall off from you! Good luck!

All whey protein so-called 'supplements' are a very poor choice for nutrition. If you want, here is some more good info. In general, there is a huge amount of scientific evidence that favors eating 'real foods'. Sure, that's kind of hard to do maybe while screaming down a mountain road at 50mph, but for breakfast? No problem, choose some 'real foods.' And about the whey heavy metal content, do you have the money to do analytical testing on all of the whey you buy? Because I sure as hell would do it, the heavy metal contamination shows up in a lot of brands.

Agreed that you should eat real foods for all macro-nutrients, but whey as a source of protein (and just protein) is actually a very good source. I regularly use this as a post-workout mix with a carb source for a quick injection of protein and follow this up with a proper meal after this. As long as it is just a 'supplement' and not a 'replacement', yuo should be golden.

That in itself is a very good sign things are going in the right direction. Not knowing the intensity of your training is hard to tell if 700 calories is a lot or not for breakfast alone.

Not sure if by "trying to have less red meat" you meant trying to reduce your overall animal protein intake or just the red meat itself; egg whites are a good source of protein, they'll mix right in the shake, are natural (well somewhat natural if you go with egg substitutes), and low on calories.
I think with egg substitutes you get something like 50-60 calories and 10g of protein for the equivalent of 2 eggs (which would be about 150 cal and 12g of protein). Basically about the same amount of protein with one third the calories. Just an alternative to consider.

I second or third the not using Whey, But try adding in some leafy greens, good nutrients carbs and protein. Your body likes plant based protein better so use rice, pea or hemp. Look out for processed isolates, they dont absorb well. If its working for you, good on ya!
