Is anyone missing a P3 in Orange County, San Diego, LA or Riverside counties?
CL Posting here:
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/bop/5306719603.html

I asked what size it was and got pictures back with a tape measure being held up to the frame. The ad seems to be that they just took all the words that are written on the frame and put them in the ad. And didn't include that it has a crank/BB, cadence sensor, pedals and saddle.

Playing coy, I asked "Hi, what is the thing that is zipped tied to the the frame near where it says White?"

Responded with "It's a meter of sorts I don't have the other piece but also on the crank is a watt meter valued around 100 dollars"

It does indeed sound suspicious, but on the other hand, the seller could also have obtained it from an auction at a container or storage facility.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Did you consider reporting it to the police? They might be interested in a 3k bike/accessories being sold for $400.00. That's normally known as a clue. The guy who had it stolen might have already reported it as well so they would have a description and maybe serial numbers.

Have you asked when he's going to take the steel fencing out of the package? The puppy is going to tear the cardboard apart.

That's a pretty sick looking watt meter on the crank.

Someone needs to ask him how many miles its been ridden, whether it was commuting or racing, and other kind dumb questions to see if he tries to legitimately respond.

So just for clarification, you want the police to drop what they are doing, on top of their already stacked workload of homicides, drugs, and child porn rings to scope out a suspicious craigslist add?

I've purchased things like this on Craigslist (or from sketchy people selling on the street) and gotten it back to the original owner. Since you're already in contact, just buy it and get it to the owner. Post ads, etc. If no one bites after a month, then maybe it was legit somehow (auction like someone mentioned, selling something SO abandoned as they moved out, etc.), then sell it on here and profit handsomely.

Mine as well......then I point them to the hardened criminals peddling stolen bikes on CL.

No, I expect them to do their jobs and investigate stolen property being sold in their jurisdiction. Just as I did when I was a cop. I got a tip on a case like this and ended up solving over a dozen other stolen property cases, these do not happen in ones and twos. This is what investigative departments are for in LE organizations, to investigate crimes.

so if the local police investigated every stolen property lead and tip on craigslist, you're honestly telling me this wouldn't impact their ability to fight and stop more serious crime? You don't have to be a cop to know that chasing petty criminals and crimes on want ads is a complete waste of time and tax dollars.

I sent an email over to the Temecula Sheriff's Investigative Team with the pictures, not sure if they will do anything, but I tried...

oh boy... I think you making the mis-guided assumption about how police operate. You really don't seem to be aware that police departments have 'distinct divisions' (or units) to deal with homicides, drugs, and even property theft!

So to answer your question: "NO". No one is naive enough to think that someone investigating a homicide should taken off the case to investigate this. Rather, perhaps someone who's job is to investigate property theft might want to take a look and determine if it's worth pursuing.

Cool, let us know if anything comes of it. Maybe somebody will at least be able to get their frame back.

Their response

"Good Afternoon,

I agree with your assessment that the individual selling the bicycle is not educated regarding cycling or the bicycle’s components. Unfortunately, we have not had any recent theft reports of that brand of bicycle. I will hold onto the information in the event that someone makes a theft report regarding a Cervelo bicycle.

In the event that you go look at the bicycle or purchase it, please email me the serial number and I will check on it.

Thank you for the information."

So you're telling me, every police department is staffed adequately to investigate random tips on want ads? Cops don't just sit around waiting for the phone to ring so they can rush out and investigate every phone call and tip for petty crimes. Different units work together, and if the theft division isn't getting inundated with bogus leads from suspicious craigslist ads, they are assisting in more important matters. No one is naive enough to think that these guys are sitting around eating donuts if there are no cases to be worked in their specific office.

I wouldn't say that they were sitting around, but they responded to my email in 23 mins.

YMMV....

No, I'm not commenting on the staffing of police departments. From the sounds of it, you are not informed enough to know the staffing needs of the department anyway, so I'm not sure why you're commenting on that either. ...I'm also not assuming that anyone is lying around eating donuts. Again, not relevant.

Of course there is collaboration amongst departments, but that doesn't mean that reporting suspicious activities cause shifts in staffing allocation, or bring the system to a stand-still. It may be dismissed the moment it is received. However, on occasion, it could actually be a valuable piece of information. I'm not sure why you'd claim to know what is, or is not, of interest to the police department.

And the response was both reasonable and substantive. Seems like in addition to just reading the email, they actually checked to see if there had been any reports in their jurisdiction. It certainly sounds that, notwithstanding all the homicides and serious crimes they have their hands tied up with, had there been a report, they would have followed up further.

I seriously don't get shivermetimbers "don't report minor crimes" approach.
