Ironman marathon vs open marathon
This came up in another discussion and I thought it deserves its own thread.

How does your ironman marathon time compare to your open marathon time? How about 70.3 half marathon to open half marathon?

Can't comment on Ironman run times, but for half - open: 1:13:19, 70.3: 1:21:48.
I come from a running background though, not sure if that makes a difference. Marathon times of 2:45, 2:38, 2:44, and 2:36, in that order. The 2:36 was at Boston 7 months before the 70.3 run PR.

Last year was the only time that I've done an IM and a marathon in the same year so it is likely my best comparison.

Boston - 2:45
IMLou - 3:09

It's been 2 years since my last open Marathon, which was a 2:58 at Boston in 2008. Six months earlier I ran a 3:27 in Kona. I could probably run an open on an easier course now in 2:50 and I just ran a 3:21 at IMAZ. So I'm righ around the 30min differential which is common.

3:16 open
3:50 IM

Both PRs are from 2007 and aging rapidly as I have finished 3 more IMs and 9 more marys since then.

When you have a really good year you think it is a trend...

Swim - Bike - Run the rest is just clothing changes.

open Marathon in '97 - 2:27
Kona marathon in '97 - 3:22 (it was ugly)

open half in '96 - 1:08
Half IM in '96 - 1:17 and 1:14

Looks like most well-trained and experienced folks lose about 20-25% in an IM...(Naive, impatient whippersnappers like myself lost substantially more)

ps...love to know who ck1 is...and if those times (tri/open) were run in the same years...Paul Gompers?
