Ironman France Crash... lady in a coma Quote | Reply

Last Sunday I raced IMF and had a nasty crash ~130km into the bike potion. The officials told me my race was finished as the bike was damaged. I was lucky and we found a way to enable my bike to get further down the course before I found another rider who lent me his back wheel after his crash (thanks Massimo). Finished the race with a separated shoulder, but at the hospital later that evening we ran into a family who's wife had crashed further down the course and was in a coma. I saw her being taken off the course into a ambulance while I was descending. It's been bothering both myself and my wife, as we would like to know how she is doing. Anyone with any information? The husband was from Ohio in the USA and we believe his wife was from the UK.

Sorry I can't speak to your situation. I can relate to your question because I've seen a number of bad accidents during some races and I've tried to find out information about some of these situations sometimes after the races. Obviously the race organisers are not going to put a lot of publicity around these issues. PIty as I think it would give some peace of mind to a lot of athletes.

Whatever happened, I hope she is doing OK. Obviously on the IMFrance course, there is a possiblity of bad things to happen given that one side of the road is a gorge that is several hundred feet deep. I think the road itself is not hyper technical, but because we have riders of varying descending speeds on the road at the same time, it can make things hairy. You can come out of a blind corner at full speed, only to see multiple riders riding the brakes nearly stopped, or you could be riding the brakes and have someone pass you at a really high speed. I hope she is now doing better. Nothing worse than finishing a race in hospital, but even if she did, I hope a 100% recovery is in store!

I took a look at the results list. There were only two females that didn't finish. One had a finish time for the bike, and the other had no splits at all, although it appears that she did start as she was not listed as DNS.

How did your crash happened?

My friends daughter was involved in a serious crash at the IMF, so I'm not sure if this is the same person you saw - but I can't seem to find any news reports or updates on how she is doing. She was apprently hit by an emergency vehicle head-on during the ride. She is still in a coma and my understanding is that it's early days in terms of how she's going to come out of it. Sending lots of love and prayers!

Her record appears on Athlete Tracker and shows her bike split through 144K (which is close to the end of the technical descent), then nothing. However her record does not show on the official results sheet.

Not actively publicizing the issue of injured racers I can understand (athough I don't agree with it). But removing records so that it seems like the athlete wasn't even there... to protect the image of the race???? hmmmm that's quite low.

For those interested after googling Clare's name I was able to find the following link:

http://millfieldswimming.com/news.php?newsID=241

Appears that Clare was taken to Germany and the next day flown back to the USA. It appears that Clare was hit by an emergency vehicle that was headed up the course. I saw her being placed on a spinal backboard as I continued down the course after my crash.

Our thoughts are with Clare and her family.

Unfortunately, I heard today that Clare is still not doing very well at all, and only briefly comes out of her coma

Jeez, of all the ways to wreck and get hurt on a bike, getting hit by an emergency vehicle has got to take the cake. It'd be absurd in a Monty Python sort of way if it weren't so tragic. Wonder what the race's liability is for such a mishap? I know we sign disclaimers accepting the risks of racing, of which bike crashes are somewhat 'normal', but how can they get away with apparently trying to sweep it under the rug when an official vehicle is invovled?

jeez.... I was there, first time hearing about this crash.... I did see a few people who crashed on the descents. Being hit by an ambulance sucks! but
I believe in France it would be similar to here car vs. pedestrian laws...

thanks for the link, Brooke. I'll keep your SIL in my thoughts. Hoping for encouraging signs and healing. We actually have a number of head injury recoverees here and once Clare is better they might be a good sounding board for her.
