Ironman Canada 2013
An announcement this evening is as follows:

There will be an IMC for 2013 at a to be named venue in late August or early September and they will offer:

Preferred Registration for this years athletes at the to be named 2013 event (translated means they get to register 1 week in advance of general entry opening)
Increased Slots to Kona from the current 50 back to where it used to be around 100
Increase in KPR Points and Pro Prize Money
Preferred Registration for Wisconsin, AZ and Florida for 2013 to this years athletes

Smart moves - specially doubling the age group slots and increasing KPR / Prize money - if this is like Wisconsin which currently runs a week after IMC however qualifies for the following years kona i suspect will be a big draw

Complete details to be available during Kona week

I hope Challenge continues to push into North America. It will only force WTC to be better (as seen here) and this makes triathlon better for all mankind.

what is classic comedy is the picture in the email (below) that says "RACE INFO UPDATE" links out to IMNYC website for August 10, 2013.

link won't work here I doubt...

If this is Whistler and it is 2013, I'm bummed that I signed up for Tremblant 2013 (I might need to do something stupid like racing two races too close together). Would love to race in Whistler. Not sure where the swim would happen but another IM race at an Intrawest resort would work just fine.

I cannot see any way whistler could hold an ironman. I have done IMC 8 times and live in whistler. It is not happening here. No transition area big enough to the one lake that could work and only one way in or out of town. I would love to be wrong about this but its not coming here

Well that is great news for IM Canada 2013 (if the race ever develops), but I guess it would be too much to ask for WTC to concurrently announce which races will have their KQ slots reduced in order to boost the numbers to 100. I'm not hating on WTC as I'd expect any company to handle it rather quietly, and over time, but it does make a difference to a fair number of athletes with hopes and dreams of KQing elsewhere.

Y'think?

I'm all for more choice and am sure that they'll come up with another location - but whether or not it stacks up to what Penticton has offered for the past 30 years remains to be seen. I don't see the logistics of Whistler working out but perhaps Banff/Lake Louise would be a good option in Western Canada...

Anyone else notice the Ironman Facebook page has not mentioned IM Canada at all? Lots of Louisville updates etc even pre race but not a work leading up to IMC.

The Calgary 70.3 course would be very easy to convert to a 140.6 course.

At the start of a mountain run (in Wicklow) earlier this year someone asked about dangerous wildlife - to which I replied that there might be bears but not to worry as by the time we got to them they'd be full.

LOL. My thoughts are it will be here or Kelowna. Calgary has an advantage with a course that can be lengthened to fit the longer distance and still have a single "lap" bike (point to point).

This is what I would do based on practicality:

2013 Ironman Calgary on double the 70.3 course...infrastructure is there...100 slots
2014 Ironman Whistler...not sure if. Calgary returns to 70.3

If they can pull off Whistler from nothing in 12 months, that is even more awesome. I hope they do as I would love to race in Whistler. Trained and vacationed there several times and love it. I've done the old IMC in Penticton 6 time and would eventually go back to do it as part of Challenge.

I agree. I have done that race twice when I first started getting into this crazy sport, and I think that Calgary would be a viable option if they can find a bike route. Perhaps sending bikers towards the Rockies and back. The run could be two loops. I would do that race for sure!

& then there's the issue of volunteers. What is Whistler's culture like? How big of an area do they have to draw from?

You would need to follow the current route through Cochrane, south to Bragg and then west. Going west out of T1 is a disaster waiting to happen.

I would do a Calgary 140,6 because I live here but I will do Penticton in 2015 or 16... my calender has way too many must do events where I have a shot at winning or podium finishes... ie 2014 FINA Masters Worlds (swimming 200 Fly, 400 IM, 800 Free, 3k OW - no 1500:( )

Doubling the Calgary 70.3 makes the most sense from a logistics & timing standpoint. They have a course laid out already, an experienced RD & local crew to run the show, and a proven track record for being able to pull off a major triathlon. Plus there's no significant barrier to entry wrt convincing the city...

Whistler is tough logistically: there's only one road (Hwy99) that runs through the area with no reasonable alternative for non-race traffic. They don't have a local RD with experience of staging a triathlon of this magnitude and while there is an excellent community of volunteers in the Sea to Sky corridor, this isn't the "one big thing" that they rally around all year and get excited for. They put on ski races in the winter, mtb races in the summer, and running races year 'round. They've hosted the Olympics and many World Cups (multiple years of nordic skiing, biathlon, ski jumping and alpine). They do trail building and para-athlete projects. They climb. They paddle. They kite. They hike. Everyone's outside, all year round. It's an amazing volunteer base but they're really busy doing all sorts of stuff year round and especially with no history behind it, IM won't have the same draw and impact that it does in many communities.

Then there's a bit of a weird vibe that occasionally exists between Whistler (the marquee name) & Squamish (the source of a large percentage of the volunteers) as well... Oh, and the city of Whistler can be a royal pain in the ass too. :p

What does IM offer Whistler? What benefits will it bring to offset the cost? It's possible to design a spectacular course out there (especially if they were to entertain an off-road run course) but I don't see IM as a particularly enticing offer to the cities in the corridor.
