ITU is drug testing Age Groupers at Worlds

It appears that ITU has been listening.

They are drug testing Age Groupers in both races at Worlds on Sunday. The announcement only said "random" and provided no details. We were requested to have an ID in case selected for testing.

Good. Lets hope people are keeping their supplements close so no one can put a tainted substance in it.

If they tested a couple dozen or more, then there should be some interesting ST threads in a few months.

Why on earth would they announce this beforehand? All someone that's lit now has to do is not show up.

Lot's of comedians on here. Thanks for asking!

I coach the woman who won that age group for the 2nd year in a row. She had a chaperone and it looked like second place had a chaperone as well. There was another chaperone standing around texting and I didn't pay that much attention, it may have been for 3rd place.

#4 & #5 did not have chaperones

nick - that was a nickname I had when I was an AG swim coach. Could have been my long hair, multiple earrings & piercings though

While they were testing my bike for a motor in Penticton worlds, I kept asking when do I get to be given a drug test. Bring it on.

With that being said, I was amazed how many folks I talked to that have been to Kona, or know about it, and say they know first hand tons of folks from many countries
who take drugs. So, it seems no need to do random drug testing. If all the athletes who know these folks talking drugs would just turn them in, ....

What does that mean that they had a "chaperone"? Sure, I know what a chaperone is, but in this context you're clearly using the word to mean some tri-jargon thing. I mean, heck, the ladies are adults so their parents have probably given up trying to prevent them from making out with their date.

They do age group testing in Kona. I've had 4 athletes get tested over the past 5 years.

It seems, strictly based on the sampling of my athletes that have been tested, they test those that have been the fastest Age grouper at an IM and/or won their age group at 70.3 worlds.

Everyone who suddenly pulls out should be tested OOC. That's the biggest red flag ever.

Not tri jargon. It's the same context in all sports where people are tested. Part of the process by which they attempt to prevent people from spoofing drug tests is that someone stays with you at all times between the race finish and the drug test.

Do you mean it is the first time ITU is doing Age Group testing in ITU worlds? Do you have any links that might prove this?

If this is the case, ther might be an interesting corollary from this...

Chaperone is an official position in WADA-defined sample collection. Read here.

What does that mean that they had a "chaperone//

Back in my day I would get someone right at the finish line grab my arm and escort me all the way through the process of collection. They made sure you did not drink anything other than sealed water bottles, and they would just walk around with you until you could pee. I never had an issue, but heard of folks that took hours to work up a good pee. They also had to see you actually peeing, that came in at the end of my career. Guess there was some bladder fake tests being done out of sight in the stalls, so hand on Weiner with an audience watching the flow out the hole....

So a chaperone in every sense of the word..

same experience in swimming. they sit at the end of your lane when you are in the warm up pool and follow you everywhere else.

Nope, first year was Germany, like 2008 or so. Was interesting all of the sudden a number of our top athletes were no longer able to attend the event.

When I ran collegiately we had to attend an anti-doping seminar at the beginning of each season in order to be eligible (it was like 3-4hrs long if I recall) and covered all sorts of things from process, to being responsible for what you put in your body, etc (we were also told in no uncertain terms by the athletic director, that if you failed a test, the university would not defend you, or hire you a lawyer, and would instead leave you out to dry... which was refreshing to hear). They also showed us some videos as to why the process is the way it is... Including a video that is used in the training for doping control officers, that shows a well known female sprinter from the 80's run right past the chaperone to the end of the straightaway, where her husband handed her a bouquet of flowers... she also appears to grab something from the bouquet and slide it into the bottom of her race suit... It was suggested that there may have been a condom full of clean urine, that she could slip into her privates, and then put the long stylish nails that she favored to use to rupture the condom and release clean pee unnoticed when it was time to produce a sample... They also provided some examples of similarly clever moves guys used to fool the officers. Needless to say, it is now much harder to elude the chaperones, and with cameras on every phone, such moves are much harder to get away with... And yes, the chaperones escort the athlete from the finish up until the sample is produced, divided and labelled, and yes they watch you pee (which is why blood tests are way easier to use for doping control...)... I've officiated races this year, where some of the elites were still hanging around and hadn't been able to produce a sample, 3+ hours after their race...

It's good to see that they are doing AG testing. It was a start to see the motor checks in Penticton (as someone who was checked I was happy to suffer the minor inconvenience for the peace of mind that it would root out the cheaters), and hopefully next year at the Multisport festival there will be both (drug and motor tests).

And yes the term chaperone is pretty universal in sport when it comes to in competition testing (there are no chaperones, just officers for out of competition tests...).

It was announced in the ITU webcast as well as the TeamUSA meeting.
