They stopped the race why exactly..?
Just for FYI. The water was posted at 19C at the beach for days. So everyone is asking about the "official" water temp and nothing. So when we were told it was over 22, we were all in shock.
USAT had never seen anything like this so no one was prepared to protest.
We had 6 family members, including me, in the Aquathlon. So I was done and was watching my wife and daughter finish the swim as I am video taping them. Then all of a sudden, the officials
told them the race had been stopped for them and took their chips. We were all in shock. There NEVER was a reason given. We had older women on the USAT team that were stopped
and therefore did not get their podium results.
After we finally found our USAT folks, who were not at the race and said what was going on with the lying about the water temp and stopping the race. They had no answers other than
since a protest was not placed within like an hour, there was nothing that could be done.
So, after USAT went at it with the ITU, they came back to all of us at dinner that night and told us to never allow an official to take our timing chips. And magically, the water temp
for the sprint and Olympic races became wetsuit legal and the water temp became under 22 again.
Everyone learned a lot from this race, which is why I am more prepared now for stuff like this.
And since we had a Gal barge into the ITU board meeting and just rip them about the above, I have not seen the ITU make the same mistakes since. Did not help my family
but it seems to have helped others.
