Water's flat.
Bike's flat.
Run's flat.

As far as the terrain, if you are in the M30-34, it's all so flat you shouldn't even worry about training :).

Even with my training, I still think you're safe. I have a total of 1 Xterra under my belt and I'd hardly consider myself in contention for a top 10-15 spot in our AG. I do think it will be awesome just to be a part of an event like this. Definitely an honor to me.

I also only have done one xterra. Unless the field explodes I don't think you'll have trouble making top 15, since there were only 9 total last year (including one DNF).

So...last year total of <10 in AG. This year 6 spots in M303-4 put you in World Champs Xterra in Maui? Hmmm...

Yep, I'll be gunning for one of those spots. I'm sure the field will be bigger, but how much bigger remains to be seen.

Starting to think about travel logistics. With a (fairly) inexpensive host hotel and a relatively short distance from the airport, flying is much more appealing than making a 20 hour drive. The question is, how do I get my bike there? Any case that will fit a mtb will be over the size requirements of the airlines (looking at SW specifically).

You could ship it to the Cahaba Cycles in Pelham. It is very close to the host hotel.

From Southwest's website:
http://www.southwest.com/..._pol_tab_list_tab_12
Any of the items listed below may be checked in substitution of one piece of the free Checked Baggage allowance for each Passenger at no charge on a one-item-for-one-bag basis. If the item of sporting equipment exceeds 50 pounds in weight or 62 inches in size (outside length plus height plus width), excess weight and size charges may apply.
Bicycles
(defined as nonmotorized and having a single seat), including Bike Friday and Co-Pilot, properly packed in a hard-sided bicycle box that fall within the dimensions and weight limits established for normal Checked Baggage, (
i.e.
, 62 inches or less in overall dimensions and less than 50 pounds in weight). Pedals and handlebars must be removed and packaged in protective materials so as not to be damaged by or cause damage to other Baggage. Bicycles packaged in cardboard or soft-sided cases will be transported as conditionally accepted items.

No mtb in a hard case will even come close to that 62" limit (and is unlikely to come in sub-50lb), nor their higher limit for anything not shipped as cargo (84" IIRC).
Any ideas what it costs to ship a bike fedex or ups?

I have flown with my 29er in a Pika bag many times and most times with no cost. That is likely what I will use.

Oh...well crap. Sorry.
I have about a 4 hr drive or I'd tell you to ship it to my work via fedex (only like$19 shipping). Wish I could help.

Ive used them all, but I try to avoid Delta.
Go to any major cycling event and all you see are Pika bags. I have a double too, have flown to Belgium to race cross with 2 bikes and 3 sets of wheels, no problem.

Good to hear.
Is a rental car going to be a necessity for anyone flying in to this race or are there shuttles from the airport?
