That's insane. I would never believe it, but it's true.
I would not want to be working the phone lines at any of the local hotels right now.

Going to be a total cluster except for local athletes who now get to race in what will likely be much better weather.

Anybody (and I'm sure there will be plenty) who says that this is the wrong decision is a fucking moron.

Honestly, I'm stunned they can pull it off logistically. These events take like 1500 volunteers. It is going to be one hell of a scramble to pull it off two weeks later.

Quick, grab your Kona Slot as the field will definitely be thinner.

From their site:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Dear IRONMAN Maryland Athletes,
Due to projected flooding from abnormally high tides, heavy rain, wind, and the expected impact of Hurricane Joaquin, IRONMAN Maryland will not take place this Saturday.
Given the severity of the expected weather conditions, which may – depending on the path of Joaquin – require the evacuation of certain coastal regions on the Delmarva peninsula, we can not guarantee that public safety officials will able to provide the support necessary for the safe execution of our event.
The safety of our athletes, volunteers, spectators, and staff is our number one priority.
We are asking all athletes to not travel to Maryland since forecasts expect heavy weather impact in the area. We are tentatively planning and have tentative approval to have the race take place on Saturday, October 17; however, no final decision can be made until the effects of the storm are fully assessed.
We appreciate your understanding and will be in further communication with you by 6 p.m. EST next Tuesday.

At least they are given fairly early warning as most are just getting ready to board flights this evening or tomorrow morning.

Grabbing my popcorn, this is going to be good.
Giddy up, there's no reason to look behind you, you're not heading that way.

Tough situation - but it seems like a very good response by the WTC. Bravo. It was either this or give free entry to Fall races (Florida, Arizona).

Since many ppl will not able to make it. They should open the registration and let us support the race. I would drive down and race just to show up in front of the local community.

Act of God/Nature (call it what you will) is their Get Out of Jail card...
Man, that's a tough position to be in, both for Ironman and as a participant. I know some people that already left! Ouch.

Just texted a buddy who was competing this weekend. He's super pissed, but totally understands. Nothing anyone could have done about this.

Kudos to Ironman for making the call so early in the week. Even if the storm doesn't directly hit the area, it's the right call.
That said, this whole thing seems like a logistical nightmare, especially for athletes coming from long distances.

Yeah, it sure is, but I think they're making the right decision. The Delmarva Peninsula is a pain in the ass to get to and from even in the best of conditions. During a hurricane with flooded roads, it can be nearly impossible. I only have 1 athlete racing, and he lives in SC PA, so he wasn't going to drive down until tomorrow morning.

I just got past the Jersey Turnpike and I'm turning around. Don't have a pretty difficult decision if they postponed in two weeks as its my friend's wedding....

Hopefully, most athletes can cancel reservations without repurcussions.
I agree this was the right call...tough, but right.
