According to today's Spokesman-Review there were 1,710 starters and 300 DNS. So over 2,000 paid must be good enough for WTC because they've renewed through 2020.

Interestingly, of the 1,710 starters, 1,335 finished. Tough day!

I wonder where the Spokesman-Review gets their figures. You would expect that the slot distribution printout would have the official numbers since it comes directly from Ironman.

The figures posted on the slot allocation sheet don't include pro athletes? According to the athlete tracker, there were 43 pro starters. 1663+43=1706.

Roll downs or reallocations for m50-54 and f40-44

Also interesting is M60-64 is starting to catch up to M55-59 (2 slots each). Baby boomer generation passing through. I'm right in the heart of it.

I'm pretty sure the 3rd place guy already KQ'd (IM Wisconsin, last fall), so that spot went down. I don't know how far. I was in 9th and knew it would never make down that far.

I guess jogging the "run" won't cut it -_- (even in 103 heat).

By my count, roll downs or reallocations to:

W30-34: 1 reallocation from W65-69 taken by
M30-34: 1 rolled down to 7th
M40-44: 2 rolled down to 7th and 8th places
W45-49: 1 reallocation from W70-75 taken by 3rd.
M45-59: 1 rolled down to 5th. Something went weird in this group and Reilly came back later and it rolled to 7th.
W50-54: 1 rolled down to 4th
M50-54: 1 rolled down to 4th
M55-59: 1 rolled down to 3rd
M60-64: 1 rolled all the way down to 5th

The places I mention are more or less accurate, but I might have lost track since I was quite busy people watching...

Interesting the women groups with 2 and 3 slots. I though AG get slots according to number of participants starting the race?

The M45-49 spot from Schwarze did roll to 5th ... then a re-allocated spot was picked up in 7th

M 18-24 44 starters and 2 slots ( 1 per 22)
Women 35-39 and 40-44 85 starters and 3 slots each ( 1 per 28) 170 combined starts and 6 slots?
M 40-44 231 starters and 5 slots ( 1 per 46)
M 60-64 40 starters and 2 slots (1 per 20)

Does anyone know how their formula works?

KNY knows the math better than I do, my best recollection:

IE 22 spots allocated right away to 22 AG's (one spot per)

Then 1663 divided by 28……or one spot per 59 additional competitors.

….which doesn't work at all,

Then maybe if you divide 1663 by 50 spots

….it doesn't work at all either.

There's not a lot to it. By WTC's bad allocation algorithm, for the 22 AGs with a starter, number slots = 1 + 28*(# starters/1663).

Their big problem is that this is a suboptimal algorithm for proportional allocation. Smaller issues are that they improperly deal with partial slots (decimals) and which AG to give roll-out slots to. But, it is what it is, so deal with it.

That seems like a lot of roll downs, always that many?

10 months into the qualification season, 3 and change months to Kona. People already have plans, already qualified, have done it already and don't want to waste a few months to race under trained... Lots of reasons to not take a Kona slot when it's already late June. I'd imagine IMCA, LP, etc will have even more, but I've never been to those.
