IMCDA RR: 9:43-36th OA (or From 14:03 to 10:18 to Kona!)

Many of you might remember my IMCDA RR from last year. I improved my IM time from 14:03 in 2007 to 10:18 in 2010. Well I was able to give it another shot this year to punch my ticket to Kona, and it was a success!
Check out my blog for a full detailed race report:
http://www.tmalis3.blogspot.com
A quick overview of my day:
Swim: 1:06
T1: 4:10
Bike: 5:10
T2: 2:00
Run: 3:20
Total Time: 9:43 which put me in 36th Overall, 21st AG'er and 4th in M30-34 and got my ticket to Kona!
It truly was a great day for me. My race wasn't perfect, but I think I executed it perfectly!
I have learned alot from ST over the years, and I'll pass on some of what I know. Thanks for reading and let me know if you have any questions

Thanks! It ended up being 0.68, so a little under the general rule (and maybe a bit too conservative), but it's what felt right on race day. Had I stuck with my original plan it would have about .72.

How do you think it matches my position? I still need to "fine-tune" the fit, but I like how it feels to wear, seems light and well vented.

you could benefit from shrugging and turtling your head a bit more. since you race long course (IM and HIM) id really stick with the wingspan.

Thanks. I listed in my long RR, but essentially cramped on the run and mile 6 with complete stomach shutdown (full gut). I think a combination of too hard on the bike, too many calories on the bike, and too hard at the start of the run. Also, I am faster in all 3 this year compared to last year....so I got that going for me....which is nice.

Nice work Tom and good write up. Where did you carry the liquid shot? Was it on your frame? Or in a jersey pocket? I've been messing with my set up all year.

9:43!? That is awesome. CDA was my first IM (13:21) and my 3rd triathlon (sprint and oly last year). I'm also hoping to go to Kona preferrably before my 25th birthday. Any tips on improving as much as you did over the years? Obviously I didn't expect to get a slot only doing this for a year, but I'm gonna push for it next year.

Here is my report from last year:
http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...om3%20imcda;#2891378
You can see I spent 2008 and 2009 away from IM and in that time I also only focused on running when my son was first born. The running focus helped get my running on track. THe focus on HIM and shorter stuff helped me with speed and practice race execution. Biggest improvement was a power meter and learning what it feel like to really hurt on the bike. Due to my focus on family time, my weekday rides are nearly always on the trainer, and it's easy to lose focus and slack. The power meter keeps me honest, and it introduced me to a discomfort I never knew existed before. It really re-calibrated my RPE for cycling.
Good luck, it's a long journey, enjoy!

I used to carry in my jersey pocket, but I got one of those Dark Speed Works bento boxes and have it mounted on my aerobars between my arms. Completely hidden from the wind.

"My plan this year, was to absolutely stick to my plan of keeping it easy (7:30) for the first half of the first loop."
Reason #428 why I'll likely never qualify for Kona until the 90-94 age group. "Easy" and "7:30" don't go in the same sentence for me. You must have used a unicycle and hopped to do it in 14:03!

In my first (14:03) I was undertrained and in over my head. It was only my second year in tri's, but I made the typical decision and said "hey that sounds cool, I can do that...." Stepping away from IM and building up consistently over a few years has made all the difference.

Congratulations on the qualification! We're glad the Speedpack worked great for you, and thanks for the mention. From reports we've gotten from other Kona qualifiers this year, it looks like more than just a few athletes with be racing with our Speedpacks at the IM championships in Kona.
Best of luck in Hawaii.

No problem. That's why I was asking you so many questions on the dimension before I bought one. The space is tight, but it fits perfectly, and is completely hidden from the wind. The only thing I didn't do is cut the straps yet. Once I do that they'll be too short to fit around the top tube, so I need to be sure this is where I always want it.
I can send you a pic of my set-up when I get my bike back. If interested, send me your email.

Absolutely do that, that would be great. We'd like to see just how you mounted the Speedpack. And maybe include a full pic of your bike too. Would you be ok if we post one of your photos on a small bike gallery page that we're going to put up on our website? Please send the pics to us at:
