I am doing IM Louisville and was curious if anyone ever experimented with trying to hydrate during an IM swim? I was thinking about sticking a gel flask with 8oz of heed or endurolyte fiz up the sleeve of my wetsuit(assuming it's wetsuit legal this year).

I've never felt the need. Just top off the tank shortly before you get in and replenish on the other side. Anything during the race, while you're in the water, seems an unnecessary risk.

*waiting for someone to suggest using a Camelback*
Quick query: wouldn't you possibly be questioned for using a flotation device, since if it is allowed, you could drink or dump the contents and use the air filled flask for buoyancy? And I'm sure throwing the flask away during the swim wouldn't be something they would be happy about....
Perhaps email the organizers and ask if it is permitted?
Edited: I'd certainly consider it for self supported swimming events longer than the IM distance.

No. You won't need it. Next question.

I'm much more likely to un-hydrate than hydrate during the swim.
Top yourself off before the swim. Nutrition starts on the bike.

Unfortunately I have a tendency to swallow enough water while swimming. One reason I'd never to the NYC triathlon in the Hudson river and probably could never do Kona with the salt water.

Ben, is that you?
Call the factory and have them integrate the flask into the sleeve, for a small upcharge of course

Here's a picture of swim hydration at the 2013 IRONMAN Lake Tahoe. Some contestants hydrated prior to the starting gun and others took a brief pause before the second lap.

There really is no need to hydrate during the swim at all.
Hydration starts in the days of week before your race. Going an hour or so without fluid won't make a difference.
Long Chile was a silly place.

I've swam OW races up to 5km, never felt the need to drink during a race. If it makes you more confident, keep a bottle up the getting in the water and drink up to there. Practice peeing whilst swimming though ;)

Hadn't practiced peeing while swimming. Got out on the bike and finally decided I should get it over with before the run. Again hadn't practiced peeing while riding and found I couldn't. At least not while pedaling. I had to coast which slowed me down. Mistake on my part. Need to practice this stuff.

I never found the need to drink while swimming. Just drink once you get on your bike.

No kidding, I can't pee while on the bike but I have learned to pee while swimming.

If you need to hydrate during an IM swim, then you're starting the race dehydrated as a mofo.

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink, is only true with seawater. When you sight, keep your mouth open. Works every time.

2 years ago to race briefing, Ironman Copenhagen a lady asked: Is there aid stations on the swim course? :-)
