How to get elite marathoner skinny?

How do they do it?

Does running all that volume just naturally make them skinny or do they also restrict their food intake to keep an ultra low body fat?

For the average triathlete or runner, how can we try to copy this also?

You can only really get as skinny as your body type allows. If you try to over do it, your performance will end up suffering.

The way to go about it? Train more, eat less, and eat healthier. I doubt the 'average triathlete' would really be able to attain, or maintain, 'elite marathoner skinny'. Personally I couldn't see why you would want to either.

Long Chile was a silly place.

I am one of those average triathlete's that is super skinny. Just like with everything else, just takes focus and will power. I keep myself around race weight all year long.

Why do I want to? When you are as tall as I am, most folks I race against are so much shorter, and weigh, even at my skinny weight, 20 to 30 lbs less. So if I want to try and be competitive, well, I try to stay
"elite marathoner skinny".

I am right at the bottom of the BMI for my height.

Seems like there is a correlation though between people willing to take a long term calorie counting approach to their body mass, and people who have a "Can get really skinny" body type.

Joke answer: Run 150 miles/week. Guaranteed to work.

Serious answer (coming from someone who used to be a 200 pound football player/sprinter and now runs a bunch and would get swirlies from those types of football players). Choose 2 of 3.
:
(1) Keep the fire burning.
-morning workout fasted (just coffee), limit recovery food binge that is so popular (no need to eat right after to replenish glycogen or whatever)
-raise HR in the afternoon/evening, even if it is just a 20 minute jog or spin
-if you sit a lot at work, walk around every hour or something
-walk or generally do something active after dinner

(2) Lots of vegetables to fill you up and get lots of fiber.
-huge plates of veggies for lunch and dinner (cannot really overdo it. Unless you eat like a cow or something)
-hydrate throughout the day, especially before bed
-keep protein intake moderate, not high

(3) Tapeworm.

Make the majority of your diet living foods. You can't just exercise it off. You have to change your diet by eliminating all processed food. Bulk up on LOTS of local, organic fruits and vegetables. Juice some, and eat some whole. Take healthy fats like flax and coconut oil and a seed protein, like hemp, for muscle recovery. The more of these living foods you get in you, the less processed food you will crave. It will cause your body to burn all unnecessary fat from your frame. If you cut out all processed, packaged food, you'll begin to see a huge change in just 10 days.

double maybe triple your weekly run mileage and don't increase your food intake until you've doubled it.
But yes I know a few elite runners, Olympians, and sometimes they don't eat very much. At least one of them eats a lot of beans and rice as well.

I eat anything I want. Just had pizza at lunch. Big piece of cake at a party. I eat anything. Who needs to watch what type of food. NONE of it is fating if you just watch the quantity!

The east african marathoners get skinny with a processed grain as a staple of their diet.

I wonder if these guys eat very little protein too which has a catabolic effect with regards to muscle mass.

As most have said, run a lot. When I was in university and for a while after I was around 135lbs at 5'11" on 100 mile weeks, I had a team mate who was about 120lbs at 5'9"
