Holiday kindness to your pool lifeguards, bike shop folks, etc.

It's easy to remember to a Christmas card and a couple bucks to the mailman, newspaper guy, etc, but how about also doing the same for the people who watch you go back and forth in the pool, know where the AED is, and silently make it possible for you get those laps in? And the folks down at the bike shop who probably don't make a great living but absolutely love turning wrenches and are always there for your curbside consult? The early bird swimmers at our pool pooled resources to give the front desk lady a Kroger gift card and $$$ to the head guard to be split among those folks who are in the chair at 5:30 am for us. You might think about the same. Happy Holidays to all.

Great idea (or reminder) for everyone.

My wife enjoys baking but we could never eat it all, especially during the holidays. Our local bike shop is the beneficiary. They really enjoy it. I also like to bring them beer during peak bike season around here (March and April) when they are slammed with service leading into IM Texas as well as the spring charity bike rides.

We also thought it a good idea. Sean Connery remarks about the best kind of presents in Finding Forrester, "unexpected gift at an unexpected time." These people welcome your thoughtfulness.

We've been doing that for 10 years at the "Early Bird" swim program that I belong to. It's 5-7am MWF with a lifeguard that opens and closes the pool and watches us outdoors year-round. There is no coaching or official master's program -- it's strictly do your own thing. And it's not a lot of people either. I've been swimming pretty much with the same people +/- a few that tend to come and go. Everyone gives $10-$20 and we typically collect $160-$200. Then we give it to the guard on the scheduled "party" day which is this Friday...donuts and mimosas...right after we finish swimming.

Of course, he [when not in character] also advocated slapping a woman around from time to time, so ...

That being said, yes, it IS a good idea

Our reception girls at the gym don't stay around long enough to really get to know that well, however, and such a gesture may be misinterpreted by the newer ones [there are a lot of creeps about, y'know?]

The ones who HAVE stuck around, we see socially outside the fitness center, so they get Xmas loot for being cool

The "party day" is also a great idea. One we might try but after about 35 minutes in the water, folks leave in ones and twos while others (who wouldn't want a mimosa at that moment) want another 1500 yards. Several years ago we started an annual December IHOP breakfast. The group is polled in Nov as to which Dec Saturday after swimming works the best for the most. First on that day there's a good workout (that not all attend) and then it's flapjack time. Can get 20 or more to show up. Try it.

Yeah, timing doesn't work for everyone but most people can grab at least a donut. We went to World of Beer one year but it's very hard to find a day that works for everyone as people start disappearing for the holidays. The key thing, though, is the gift for our lifeguard. It is only one person - not a rotating duty - so our ability to swim before work is entirely subject to the young lady's reliability. And it can be pretty cool sitting outside for 2 hours on those winter days when we get temps in the 40s.
