Help me optimize my bike fit
[Update: I have since dropped my seat about 1/2 cm since taking the first two videos and my foot isn't reaching nearly as much. Feels better, too.]

With all the recent threads seeking advice from the community, I figure I might as well throw my fit out there.

I had a Retul fit a year ago and shockingly, I think my seat was too high. Just brought it down about 1cm three weeks ago to stop my hips from rocking. This new spot is comfortable and I've logged a couple 3+ hr rides in aero in it. Looking to optimize the fit now before racing on it.

Any criticism/advice welcome.

Height: 5' 11''
Frame size: 54cm
Race Distance: 70.3
FTP: 320W
Weight: 156 lbs

Looking to ride a 2:17 in my goal race in June. Course has about 2k feet of rolling terrain. Will have full disc and 90 front, full aero suit & helmet.

I apologize in advance for taking video in portrait mode--the slow-mo mode was zooming in too far in landscape and I couldn't move the camera any further back. Also, all the sound is the clothes dryer right behind the camera.

I'm fairly new. With them warning out of the way. I'm the same size as you but ride a 56. Your position looks very similar to mine in the beginning. I added a touch more reach after getting used to the position. Again I'm far from good at this but maybe Dan will jump in.

Bump for more feedback.

And do you say this because of my toe "reaching" a bit at the bottom?

I'm not rocking side to side at my hips, so I figured this was optimal. Happy to drop it a bit more if consensus is there, though.

My stem is a -25° 90mm, I think I'd have a hard time adding reach with that setup. Probably upgrading bikes next year though - been on this one since Jan 2015.

Bump. Updated position with new video. Any feedback?

Also considering upgrading my helmet. But will face winds from all directions in race, and from what I've read the Air Attack is a versatile helmet for different yaws.

is it not possible to have video that's directly from the side and well lit?

It is impossible to "fit" a cyclist or multisport athlete to their bike properly by just looking at a video without doing a proper physical assessment. So be cautious about using any tips you receive from a forum post.

James,

Sorry--the basement is quite dark and slow-mo videos are darker for whatever reason.

Brought out the construction light and finally have a well-lit video.

Here you go:

Optimal for what? I agree that your seat could be lower, but you won't get a consensus. Aerodynamically you'd be better with a lower saddle... more level foot, and a bit less leg extension. Might be some benefit from being "in" your bike a little more. Sustainable power and the effect on run performance are the other parts of the equation, but FWIW pro TTers would run a significantly lower saddle even for much shorter races.

Otherwise you look good to me.

I agree on it needing to go down a tad

I don't think toe down is bad, but I feel like the angle between the foot and lower leg is a bit obtuse.

I don't think the knee angle is all that bad but I think the excessive toe down causes a bit of angle changing at the top and potentially over stressing your calf as you go from 12-3 o'clock in the pedal stroke
