Hed hub services
Hi,

I would like to clean my Hed freehub before the start of the season and I cannot find anywhere good reference how to do it for HED hub.

Anyone having a good link that I could use?

Which grease should I use to replace the old one? Mavic specify its own, is HED doing the same^

Thanks,
Fred

Send me a photo of your hub and I will tell you what I know. Typically, the hubs are quite simple. Two 5mm Allen wrenches to loosen the end cap from the axle. Pull the axle out (may require a rubber hammer if sticking). Pull the rubber seal of the hub shell. Clean out old grease, seal, and pawls on freebody. Check bearings. Bearings can be a bit more difficult to change in the freebody hub on older models. The new freebody hub with the 6902 bearings is much more user friendly if you have a good bearing tool.
Grease. A good off-the-shelf product would be Pro Gold EPX. Lightly coat the pawls and engagements. The stock grease in a new hub is proprietary to Hed but the Pro Gold will do well.
Place rubber seal back in with the chamfered side against the main hubshell. Place axle back through and assemble hub. If the seal is best up call Hed and get a new one.
Like I said, send me a photo and I can tell you everything about the hub. Istanford64@yahoo.com

Im sure the previous poster helped you out but https://www.hedcycling.com/tech.asp has videos of hub swaps that can show you easily how to remove your freehub body.

Hi Ian,

I wonder if you could help me too. I bought a used front Hed 3. The hub is in bad shape and I would like to rebuild it. The text on the bearings is "Enduro 6001 2RS". I can replace these with new ones from VXB.

I'm wondering about a new axle. Hed sells one for $40, but it doesn't appear to have the hollow spindle etc included:

They also sell a track axle which has more parts.

Thanks for any help you can give.

There is a lot going on with that hub other than just bearings and an axle. It is best to contact Hed to get a RA to have their H3 builder do the service. The bearings are set very carefully to that specific rim.

Definitely not something you want to do on your own. You can ask for new axle and bolts as well. -Ian
