I am thinking of shortening my cockpit length by getting a shorter head stem...what issues (i.e. handling) do I need to be aware of in making this change...how short is too short...what are the shortest stems (how many mm?) on the market (threadless/ Aheadset style)...thanks.

You have to look hard to find anything shorter than 90 mm for a road type stem. I have seen mountain stems as short as 40 mm.
I haven't heard of anyone having handling problems from going to a shorter stem. I have had problems with too long a stem causing handling difficulties.

Profile H2O stems go as short as 60mm , 90 degree, good tri stem
