Hawaii (former) Police Officer Indicted in Cyclist death
Quote | Reply
For those of you who were following, or saw my rant in the Kona Survival guide, of the case of the on-duty an Hawaii County police officer who struck and killed Jeffrey Sunrow of West Bloomfield, Michigan on March 1, 2015 and then fled the scene while driving along the eastern portion of Waikoloa road pre sunrise (and post dawn), the officer was finally indicted 10 days ago. The officer had been terminated with cause last year.

Negligent homicide is often referred to as involuntary manslaughter elsewhere. The charge is First degree due the Mr. Sunrow being a vulnerable user (bicyclist).

The 19 month time between the fatal crash and the indictment is slightly slow for Hawaii County where the average time from a fatal accident to indictment is 18 months. That average is slow even by Hawaii state standards btw.Z

Edit: That portion of Waikoloa Road has been widened and now as a very large shoulder. Pity it took a death to get the work done.
