I've only had the chance to swim in a 25y pool and can't even begin to fathom how fast these guys are, and that's on LCM. Thanks for the share, that was eye opening.

I swam with a local collegiate guy earlier this week...he was passing me at the wall...underwater...using a pull buoy. That was humbling!

That was cool, people should take note of how much rest the best in the world take. It is not about touch and go, it is building speed through long rest, and steep descending sets..

That, and how fast they actually go in practice.

At that time, I don't recall specifically, but I'm guessing they were at about 1:45 ish for the 200? To go 11 or 12 secs off your PB in the middle of practice in the 200 is a really high level of effort.

And the 50 s with fins at world record pace? Wow...

Excellent and very underrated point. Too many are wrapped up in the "I do my hundreds on 1:30" thing when they're getting 3 secs rest. A 15 x 100 turns essentially into a straight 1500.

For those too lazy to click, here's a very interesting picture of Phelps' head position. He's going so fast his head is almost out of the water. :)

I love the layer of water wrapped around his head. Fluid dynamics is cool!

Ya, "wrapped around" is a good descrip, as it doesn't appear that much water is going over his head, prob b/c he is riding so high in the water due to his high speed in the water. It would be interesting to know what speed he was going when this pic was taken. :)
