Not in my book. "
i expect that to eclipse the fins. " I don't care if he runs to the moon and back. He'll always be Finman to me.

This is a rather interesting thread to be falling on the heels of Yom Kippur - the day of reckoning. To do Teshuva (redemption) there does need to be an acknowledgment of wrongdoing as well as a sincere apology. That is lacking here.
It seems that Mr. Cardia just wants to detract from his cheating with a 'challenge' in the hopes that others will forget what gave him his infamy. The photos in the thread link above (from November 2008) clearly show a man carrying fins at the beginning of the race which shows just how deep this man's pathology goes. No amount of ultraracing now will undo his deceipt.
I believe it was PT Barnum who said 'there is a sucker born every minute'.
Buying into this 'challenge' proves it.

frank, i hope you're reading this, it appears you're not getting my emails. check your junk mail, or, make sure your smtp is working.
so that you all know, i've gotten rid of a few finman user accounts and the posts therefrom, because i could not verify any belonged to frank. it appears "therealfinman" is (was) frank, but my emails to him have not been answered; i took the safer route and pulled the posts and deleted the user account.
so...
frank, if you're out there, reregister and you're good to go. but, use your email account that i'm familiar with. and, figure out some way to receive and answer my emails.

Yeah and the part about how everybody thought it was a fish and they were all watching it "go in, go out" with the waves? What the hell ever! Nobody is going to stop on the second loop of an IM swim to watch a supposed dead fish go in and out with the wave action. Can you picture that? What a butthole

Not to mention a half-black/half-bright-blue dead fish with a strap!
Agreed. I watched the video and I'm disturbed by this guy's need for attention (beginning with the sign on his back in NYC). Its embarrassing for our sport.

Excellent point, Dev. But with a big sign like that on his back during the marathon, he's sending out the message to lots of people that he is part of our sport.

Way too many haters in this thread. This whole challenge is a win-win-win
win 1 - I mean come on, the original finman trial by internet was great, now we are getting an appeal.
win 2 - Even if this guy is full of BS (I actually find his story plausible), he is laying himself out there. He is going to be under a microscope for this challenge. If he is not for real he is going to be a laughingstock at every tri he does from now on and you can legitimately ridicule him.
win 3 - If he actually completes the challenge he either did his penance or proved the naysayers wrong. If in his mind this is what he has to do to prove himself to the world, good for him. I don't care how slow he goes, if he completes his challenge (even if you are convinced he cheated at IMF), he is worthy of some respect. Even if he used fins, people have cheated way worse on the bike at IMF and been subject to nothing like what he got.

This has to be the most entertaining thing to wash up on ST in a long while... well, second perhaps to the original "event".
I'll watch the coverage. Makes no difference if I believe him or not. The whole thing's a genuine chuckle.

I really do not care if he cheated in FL, so what. Not sure how that is really an affront to tri, me or anyone else. There are plenty of people that chat in races, I tend to prefer the cheaters that are really slow. It is the faster AG folks drafting/doping etc that I think are an issue.
The stupidity challenge however will be really interesting to watch/read about. Can't wait. Only have done a couple IM's and did not feel like running a mary at all the next day.
Now if we could get him to do an ICB or 2 along the way...that would be something ;-)

Triyoda...I am feeling neglected that finman did not chose to do his comeback event at Epicman. Epicman is not USAT sanctioned, so he could have done it in June, we allow fins, and we allow drafting. As Chris G said at one point, Ironman Florida without the extra 13 miles !!!

I agree. For this to be legit, there should be some sort of time cutoff -- there is no walking the entire 26.2 miles for the marathons..
What does this prove if he does do it? Do we really care?
It's all BS.

side showing again. it's a story of redemption. of recovery. of making lemonade. let's all yell, frank,
you lie!
but then, if he gets back up and goes 3-for-3 at the finman challenge, what medieval flagellant has done more to atone?
me, i'd be mortified by the whole fin episode. but this guy. i wish i had his shameless nerve.
Dan, this is a story of crap, not redemption. You will cover it just because you think it will help your business.
This makes me think of Jerry Springer. Crap but it was on tv because some folks did watch it and it was selling advertising.

I am just wondering how he managed to get entered in IMAZ. Since the race closed some time ago, wasn't he under a suspension at the time of entry? Or was he allowed to enter because the race is after his suspension. Does a suspension start from the date of the incident or the date of the "ruling"?

So, what is the challenge?
Marathon, IMAZ, Marathon... just complete these three events?
Is that supposed to be difficult? How about offering a real challenge? How about $10,000 USD to anyone that beats him?

sc,
most of the time, the penalty always basically is dated to the problem or when the infraction occurred. Basically the penalty is assessed usually well after the situation and basically "retroactivated" to the date of the issue.

He doesn't address why his chip never registers at the bike turnaround. Something that was dug up when he first got caught. I found that more damning then the fins.

He still doesn't answer the question of how he could have gotten his NYC Marathon packet, which he couldn't have gotten until like 10AM Eastern on Thursday before the races (and needed to personally show ID), when he would have had to check into IMFL by 4PM Central time that day. 7 hours to pick up two packets, travel to/from airports and fly down there. And landing like 1 hour in Newark before he would have started NYC, is still not a lot of time to get to Staten Island, and in to the starting area etc., even though Newark and Staten Island are not far apart at all. Hmm.
