Going from 10 sp to 11 sp
I'm in the process of buying a new bike that has 11 speed. I currently have a tri bike and road bike that are 10 speed. I'm thinking of leaving the road bike as (use it less than 5% of the time), and will be trying to sell my older tri bike. I have a set of race wheels that have a PT in the rear hub as well as a training wheel with a PT - both obviously 10 speed.

What I'm thinking of doing is just getting a new 11 speed freewheel for the race wheels and for the training wheel. The new bike is coming with a set of race wheels (Reynolds strike that are 11 speed) but I'm thinking of just selling them to help defray the cost of the bike a bit.

What have others done when switching over from 10 speed to 11 speed?

Also, is it easy to switch the freewheel on the wheels from 10 speed to 11 speed? Are special tools required?

I think on the powertap hubs it's as simple as swapping the freewheel.

Here is a nice summary I stumbled on a while back from slowtwitch.com of all places on what cassettes are compatible with what hubs and what spacers you need to get them to work. If you have an 11 speed hub, you should be able to run a 9, 10 or 11 on it with the right spacer combo. All you need to do is switch out the cassettes (and keep track of the spacers).

For the powertap, its a simple 30 second swap. You just need to buy this 11 speed hub. you can even leave the 10 speed cassette on the old 10 speed hub, and keep the 11 speed cassette on the new hub. That lets you swap the wheel between the 10 speed bike and 11 speed bike. Here's a video of the swap

for other wheels with an 11 speed hub, you can probably buy a spacer to change it between 10 speed and 11 speed. You just put the spacer on before you add the cassette. For Flo wheels, that is an $8 part if you don't already have it.

Would like to help with your questions, but do you mean change the 'freewheel', the 'freehub', or the 'cassette' ?
These are all very different things.

Powertaps have a freehub, no freewheel. Get a new 11sp freehub and an 11sp cassette. I have a powertap wheel that I sometimes switch between a Campy and Sram equipped bike. Takes 5 seconds to pull off the freehub/cassette and pop on a different one.

I have 11 speed road bike 10 speed TT bike. I have 2 G3 powertaps. Both 11 speed, one training wheel, one race wheel. All I need to do to run 10 speed is add the 10 speed shim to the G3 hub. So convert your hub to 11 speed like said and you are all set.

Or do what I just did. I just converted the TT bike to 11 speed so now both bikes 11 speed :)

Thanks!! Looks like an easy switch over.

So, do folks who have multiple 10 speed rear wheels just get one 11 speed freehub and switch when needed? It looks like a very quick swap. I just ordered one and figured it would save a little money to only use one, then switch it to my race wheel when needed.

Are you saying multiple power tap wheels and switching hubs between those wheels. You can do that. I don't think any other hubs work that way.

Get two of these hubs for the price of a powertap hub with the added bonus of a metal rib for long life and no cassette bite.

a simpler, yet not cheaper, solution for you is buying one of these cassettes:

and switch it between training and racing wheels, as needed. at least you wouldn't deal with the hubs
