Garmin 910 altimeter issues

I've had a lot of issues with the 910xt and I'm on my second one. Both have given poor elevation readings and both have exibited the same problem. They worked great for a few rides / runs, and then the elevation graph began consistently reading in a constant decending line starting anywhere from 800 or so ft. or even in some cases -100 ft. and decending to 500 ft to - 500 ft. This happens regardless of terrain. Can anyone tell me what is going on with this and any corrective measures? Garmin couldn't advise me what was happening on the first one and eventually replaced it. The new one is only about 3 weeks old, worked great for a few events and then started reading just like the first one. Any ideas our there?

Mine did the same thing and I am constantly using elevation correction now.

Take it back for a replacement or a refund. There seems to be some hardware issues with some batches.
By all means have a plan, but the best plan is to have a plan to change the plan.

Garmin customer service now says the engineers are aware this issue exist and are working on a software update to correct it. Said unfortunately I would have to live with it but check back in a couple of months if I don't receive notice of a software upgrade to correct the problem. Guess I'll be running / biking with the old Forerunner 110 and only using the rather pricy 910 for swimming until this gets corrected.

Mine is going back for 38K elevation readings all the time...after the racing season. I just ignore the elevation both on the watch and Garmin connect since it won't correct my workout in it's current screwed up state. It was a quick response from Garmin customer support on just send it in for repairs so that was great but I can't be without for 7-10 days during the season so I'm waiting til after my last race.

Mine does the same as your unit and is useless until I hit elevation correction. I just live with it, but hate it. I don't have time to deal with calling.......next time, I will think twice about buying their product.

They sent me a replacement - or rather, offered to have me send in mine, wait up to two weeks to get it back. So I paid for one to cross ship it and get it today (I hope) and they'll refund me once they get my current watch.
Aside from the altimeter, I've had lots of ANT+ and GPS problems of late. Either my current 910xt is broken or traininerroad needs to raise their prices because my 910xt had me doing 79Mph throughout my 38 mile bike portion of a brick on Sunday (this was an outdoor ride/run). The HR didn't even start working until mile 6 of the ride. Maddening.
I am convinced there is some underlying hardware issue and firmware 2.5 did something that made some of the earlier batch of watches into paperweights. Will report how 2.5 firmware works on the watch I get today later in the week.

I am on 3.0 firmware. I am also local, 3.0mi away to Garmin headquarters and service center. I am too lazy to go there. I also have my trusty 305 that I can fall back on. Just no time to deal with that.

You have firmware 3.0? Didn't even know that was out. I wonder if that will be on the new watch I get? Let me know how you make out. Like you, I might be going back to the 310 if this new watch isn't working.

Got the new watch from Garmin today and found it interesting to note that firmware 2.4 is loaded.

Firmware 2.4 is also on the new watch I got 3 weeks ago, and I'm not changing it. Heard of too many issues with 2.5. I'm going to wait for Garmin to inform they have the elevation issue corrected and then download that software package.

More reasons to update to 2.5 than to stay on 2.4 if you read the forums.

Mysteriously the altimeter corrected itself on yesterays ride, and elevation charts were perfect. However, during the last 5 miles my speed never read faster than 9 mph. Hey I know I was tired but some of these 5 miles were downhill. this obviously resulted in average speed being way off.

Well I did a bike ride again today (about 15 miles). I can't say for certain how far because the 910xt is really screwed up. I figure I started out riding somewhere between 20-22mph. Garmin never read above 9mph and soon read 0. since it said I was not moving it didn't record distance, so my approximate 15 miles ended up being 1.7 according to the Garmin. I'm pretty well fed up with this $400 piece of junk!

I got out for a quick spin at lunch today and climbed 60,200 feet over the course of 21 miles. I feel surprisingly good.
