Garmin 820 vs 520 worth the extra $
Quote | Reply
My 5 year old Edge 500 came off my Cervelo R3 Handlebars along with a cheap bar mount and the tabs of the rear locking mechanism snapped off .
Looking to replace with either 520 or 820 but not sure if I can justify the extra $
Thoughts ?

I was thinking about getting one or the other since I could get like half off on one. I went with the 520. Theres no way I need the mapping thats in the 800. Besides, the 520 tracks your route and does have a map if you get lost. The touch screen isnt worth it for me and if a number of world tour pros use the 520 and its good enough for them, its most likely more than good enough for me...

If the only reason you are looking to replace your 500 is because of the tabs breaking off my work-around for that the past 2 years has been to use rubber/elastic bands hooked around the bottom of the mount and then across the top and bottom of the unit. Has been holding mine on the past 2 years with no problems. I am frugal/cheap though.

Personally I wish I could get a 520 with the memory of an 820 - that would be the ultimate bike computer. I currently have both and to be honest, I hate the touchscreen of the 820.

I was going to upgrade from 510, but when I looked at the different options, nothing made it seem better for me. My comments:
  • I actually like the touch screen on 510 that 520 doesn't have. Good to swipe through different screens and getting things all setup when a ride starts up;
  • I like the buttons on the top of the 510 rather than the bottom of 520, since mine is close to my bars and behind a bottle on my TT. The 520 would be hard to hit lap buttons during workouts, than my 510 is
  • I think there were a few other things, but those were the two main things that just kept me with my 510.
  • Having the bluetooth for uploads is a huge improvement over the 500 though. So that alone is totally worth the upgrade!

Haha, well there are also other sources with similar solutions made of plastic (likely 3D printed) for $10...but that could buy you a whole bag of rubber bands AND a 6pack.

I think the major difference between the two is the navigation on the 820. Do you need that feature?

I believe this is what you were trying to point out:

I don't have an 820, but I did perform this hack on my 520 and it works perfectly giving me all the map functionality that I need.

and I would much rather have the 6-pack of a good stout or porter. I figured the 500 would give out at some point and I would get a new unit, so rather than spend any money I just figured the elastic band would work in the short term - well 2 years later and the 500 just keeps on working.
