...a question:
Do you have a power meter? If you do, are you using it to measure the differences in your power between your old and new positions?
If you don't, are any of you using other tests (does not have to be in a lab - can be real-world) to determine whether changing your position has improved your power, speed, or run speed after biking?
Just curious.

I have not posted a position thread, however I did try to lower my setup from where the fitter put me due to the "spacer police". I immediately noticed a drop in speed and the bike was way more uncomfortable. By my percieved exeretion I was working way harder to move at the same speed. I thought I needed to "adapt to the new position". After riding most of the season like that, I did adapt slightly. But I dreaded getting on the bike and replaced the spacers, I immediately was faster and more comfortable. I now trust my fitter to know what is best for me, I know from experience that he will listen to my comments and make adjustments as he sees fit, but yes he probably is able to figure my optimal average between aerodynamics and the ability to apply power to the pedals and maintain an aero position on the bike. Being as aero as possible is only good if you can transfer power to the pedals.

good point but keep in mind that you may be able to develop power in that position over time and also that a decrease in power may be offset by a great increase in aerodynamics.

Good point. One test before and one test after changing your position wouldn't be the best or only factor that would determine whether or not you would change - though it would be interesting. I'd think looking at your average power over say, 4-6 weeks after changing position, could help you decide if the change is a good one or not, as well as taking comfort, run speed off of the bike during brick workouts, percieved exertion, etc, all into consideration. Just wondering what tests (if any) people are doing. I have been fooling around with my position for the past month, basically on the principles of aerodynamics and slowtwitch seat/spacer philosophy, and my comfort level. I just started reading hunter allen and AC's training with power book, although I don't yet have a power meter myself (but might have one at the end of this weekend!!). It all sparked some burning questions. Maybe some of the evidence-based training mafia will weigh in on this.

i do test as much asi can when i move stuff around, and i agree that right away you might not always see results you are looking for, often some changes are actally slower at first andthen start looking better after a few weeks.
