Fluid trainer question
So this is the first winter I've seriously been using my trainer.
In the past I've had a bare bones magneto trainer and it was awful and I guess that's why I never used it.
This year I bought a good, used Cyclops Fluid 2.

My question is this-
Do these trainers have to "warm up?"
It seems that for the first 5-6 minutes of my ride, and it's almost always 5-6 minutes, there is very little resistance. Almost like being on rollers. Then suddenly the resistance kicks in and things are good to go.
Is this just a fluid trainer thing or did I get a dud? Or do I need to service it somehow?

Thanks for humoring a dumb question.

That's a Cycleops fluid 2 trainer thing, not a fluid trainer thing in general. A very common occurrence on those. My wife's does the same (but it takes longer than that)

ETA: my Kurt Kinetic Fluid trainer doesn't do it.

It's a fluid trainer thing. As the fluid heats up, so does the resistance.

The fluid unit can get quite warm too, for some reason I always have to touch it when I'm done.

I have the Kurt Kinetic too and I don't notice any difference during my workouts.

Yes. The fluid viscosity changes with heat. I had a KKRM. They are awesome. The best. They still need to warm up, though. You cannot outrun science.

Cycle Ops Fluid is known for that. It takes about 200 watts for 5:00 to hit the 2nd level. There is actually another bump but you have to do roughly 470 watts for about 5:00 to get to that one. (like that drive by?)

Kurt Kinetic's don't respond this way, they are pretty consistent.

My Fluid 2 does the same thing, it's normal (for Fluid 2s, anyway).
