Flo 90 (steel bearings) weigh-in Quote | Reply

So, I got my sexy Flo 90 today in the mail. I brought it to the lab and set it on the scale. My data:

With skewer and rim tape:

A picture from this morning in poor lighting:

As you can see, our lab balance measured the Flo 90 (steel) at 968 grams, 16 grams heavier than Flo advertises. I'm not sure if this is a big difference or not. Just my observation. The wheels are pretty darn good looking and except for just a tiny bit of imperfection around the rim, it looks perfect.

Zipps 808 FC (clincher) is advertised at 821 grams. Really doesn't seem like that much of a difference.

Just thought I'd post for the curiosity of the board.

naw, that's not much of a difference. Probably within their normal variation of what comes out of the molds.

the wheel does look nice.

1.6% variance? I think you'll live.

Perhaps it has to do with the black logo stickers?

Black logo stickers actually make it faster ---- so I don't think it could add weight :)

I got my front Flo 60 in today and weighed it also. In case anyone cares, below are the weights. I tried using some spare red velocity veloplugs but they were too small for the spoke holes. Maybe the yellow ones will fit.

Front Flo 60 (steel bearings) - 885g
Front Flo Skewer - 51g
Supplied rim tape - 25g

wow...nice wheels. I'd like to jump in on the next order. Could you post your setup and review once you get them out on the road?

Comparing to FC clinchers isn't entirely fair. They're all carbon.

It would be more fair to compare to HED 90's front wheel: Quoted 895 grams for the FR 90 front rims, a 73 gram "penalty". Not bad. I can't find weights for the non-fr rims these days.

I love the stealth red stickers.. The gloss black really stands out over the matte black.

I really can't decide whether I should get FLOs or Heds. The only reasons I have against getting the FLOs is that they haven't been out very long so I don't know how durable they are (the rims are probably durable but I'm curious about the hub, spokes, bearings, etc.) and if they even fit my bike. All I know is it is gonna be tight but I don't want them to rub my stays if I get out of the saddle.

That's because non-FR Hed Jets don't exist anymore -- they're all (with the exception of the Express, I believe) now FR-spec.

You are concerned about the durability of Sapim CX-Ray spokes? Better not buy Heds or Zipps either then. If the hubs are not up to your standard then you could always replace them and still be well in front of the cost of Heds/Zipps etc.
I seriously doubt durability is going to be a concern with these wheels.
