So what is the test for the fittest person? What's the definition of most fit? Is it endurance based (deca ironman or TDF riders) or strength (crossfit) or the decathlon?

With the Olympics around the corner and the TDF on right now it has got me thinking. Was is the total ideal fit person and how do you structure a competition to reflect this? Crossfit with a triathlon may be a start but I think there has to be more to it than that. Interested to hear thoughts

You can't define such a test because any competition would require specialization. As an analogy, how would anyone define the world's smartest person, or a test to determine the same?

Here is the test of fittest person on earth, and it appears that it is me...(-; And i know or have not heard of anyone that can equal, let alone surpass my feats of strength and endurance. Not to mention the hand eye coordination of bowling thrown in for good measure. I would add poker to that challenge today too, clear out the fishes and donkeys..

And yes, i do celebrate festivus, it is for the rest of us..

Go to Youtube, search for the video "The workout the world forgot".
In there you will find the fittest person. No shit !
If you really want to do something, you'll find a way.
If you don't, you'll find an excuse.

Seals are a great example of solid all around fitness.

How many of you could pass hell week. 5 1/2 days, total of 4 hours of sleep, 20 hours per day of training, run 200 miles + some solid mental challenges. I know a couple of former seals and I'd first pick those guys on the playground every time.

Real life Hunger Games/Survivour Man style event where people actually have to cover a timed course over huge distance in the wildeness while having to climb mountains, swim rivers, fight bears, outsmart wolves, find their own food,etc,etc....Make it a stage race over a week and the BOP's each day get terminated..

That would sort out a few people and would be a bit more accurate than the current requirements which seem to be which sports personality the journalist writing the story has a hard on for at the time.

He's not far off the mark. These guys must pass a mile swim test.... in full combat gear including boots, wearing a 20lbs rucksack, and holding a rifle in their hands the entire time. I mean WTF!!! They march tens of miles carrying each other. Sleep only a few hours a night for WEEKS. At any point during any of this they may come "under fire by the enemy" and must respond accordingly. Etc. Few civilians have any idea what these guys do. It is nuts.

Ironman pros come pretty close to the title of fittest person. :)

So do Nepali Sherpas. Westerners pay $45,000 to climb Everest with the latest equipment and O2 and Sherpas and guides and the kitchen sink. Base camp to summit takes them typically four days. Record holder, a Sherpa, climbed the summit in 8 fucking hours all by himself. That's INSANE.

You're injecting a huge requirement of survivalist/outdoors ability. Your average first string NFL WR is undeniably super fit but wouldn't stand a chance in that sort of contest.

My uncle was in the French Foreign Legion and told me about training very similar to the Seals training mentioned by JO4.
Whole body (except for the head) buried in sand in the heat for several hours followed by a run...

My favourite one was the orientation race in the Pacific islands (Mururoa w. elevation map + objectives w. deadlines). You miss the deadline, the food is gone or it is 2 more hours or trail running with the whole equipment.

Once, they got there on time and there was no food but there was a cow. They called the C.O and he said: food IS on location.
Anyone knows how to gut a cow?

Crazy Legionnaires! He is still super fit, runs everyday after 25 years and many injuries and could care less about minimal shoes or heel drop.

Only fools never change their minds and I'll never change my mind about that.

KNew a guy who could cover 5 k in 17 min and bench his weight 36 times. I've always been amazed by this level of endurance and strength

This year was kind of a bust, new baby on board and he gets me sick once every 6 weeks or so. Last year i was living in san clemente and swimming with a really great masters group, so did my 55x100p SCY on the 1;15 base. I trained for 2 months and tapered to try and make that set, and as it turns out, i made it pretty easy. I'm still hoping to get into enough shape this year to do the 56x100@1;15 at some point, but it will definitely be a lot harder. No group to train with, and consistency is tough. I'm toying with 56x100@1;30, every other one IM too. Cool thing about birthday sets, they are yours and you get to define the challenges.

I'm not sure I buy this, kicking in boots is pretty ineffectual, swimming with a rifle in your hands is almost impossble, and full combat gear and a rucksack is a huge drag. Do you have link to rules or a video showing someone doing this?

Mostly when fitness is mentioned here on ST it is related to a particular activity or event. For instance, your most fit triathlete or TDF participant would not be considered very fit if entered into an MMA contest.

Yeah. I don't see anyway to have a fitness test that isn't some srt of decathlon type thing. Endurance, hand/eye coord, speed, power, flexibility, all come into it. Actually the decathlon isn't bad as a test, may take away one of the throws and add swimming, and one of the jumps and add wrestling, but I'm not sure how you deal with the weight class thing. Actually screw it just wrestle, the big guys get an advantage that they don't have with the 1500m, although I'd make that a 5 km.

I have seen it in person. There have to be videos online. Try searching. One mile swim in full combat gear, with a rucksack, carrying an M16. Not the new little M4. The old M16. And there was a swim cutoff. Anyone who didn't make it was out of the program.

Then, according to the rules of the game, they would die and possibly be eaten.....I wonder how many 14+hr Ironmen would make it under 14hrs if they had the penalty of death for missing the cut-off...

First you must define fitness. If "fitness" is pure athletic endurance then the elite marathoners and XC skiers are going to be hard to beat quantitatively. If you want to look at muscular endurance combined with VO2 then elite rowers are going to score very high - especially single scullers. Modern rowing is basically Crossfit invited 200+ years ago. Every stroke is a leg press, upright row, and forearm curl...all done just below anaerobic threashold.
