Family Vacation to Washington D.C. - Where to eat?
We are taking our 10 and 13 year old daughters to D.C. this summer. Will be there a week and need some recommendations for places to eat. Near the Mall, White House, etc. We will also spend some time in Georgetown. Packing some nicer clothes for nicer restaurants, too, so our options are wide open.

So, whatcha got?

Founding Farmers. If I remember it was only a few blocks from the White House. Excellent food and reasonable pricing.

Obviously don't want to break the bank for most meals so we are looking for affordable with a good "local" and non-chain restaurant experience. We are having the girls pack some nicer clothes for a nicer dinner one or two nights while there.

Oyamel in Penn Quarter is best Mexican food in the city. Not cheap and service can be a little hit or miss but food well worth it.

In addition to Ben's, I'd try the Kangaroo Boxing Club:

For a good start: http://www.washingtonpost.com/...g-dining-guide-2015/

There are a lot of good restaurants in DC though, covering a huge range of cuisines, and prices, so....what kind of food? and how much are you willing to spend?

If you're willing to travel into Arlington, Ray's The Steaks is worth trying. Reasonably priced excellent steaks. http://www.raysthesteaks.com/ It's on the Orange line.

And if you want to hit any diners, I recommend both Bob and Edith's and Metro 29. You'll need a car to get to them.'lllhttp://m.mainstreethub.com/bobedithdinercp and http://metro29.com/

For affordable and classic, you could try Afterwords Cafe in Dupont - http://www.kramers.com/cafe.html. It's on the Red Line. City Lights of China is affordable Chinese in the same neighborhood.

Or the Tombs in Georgetown - not so much because it's great food, but because it starred in the movie St. Elmo's Fire. It's also close to the Exorcist stairs, which you can check out after. http://www.tombs.com/ You'll probably need to cab here.

Founding Farmers (in Penn Quarter) is good - as a few have mentioned. They also have a sister restaurant - Fishers, Farmers, Bakers - on the Georgetown Waterfront that is great.

My favorite place in the city is Mintwood Place, in Columbia Heights (a bit north of the WH).

For a more casual experience in Penn Quarter you can check out District Taco. Inexpensive. Great food. The owner is also very supportive of the city's tri scene - sponsors a number of teams and races.

And if you feel like exploring a bit, I like Comet Ping Pong in Tenleytown/NW. Good pizza ping pong while you wait.

Also - I don't know if you want to infuse your girls with sugar.... if you do, they might enjoy a stop at Georgetown Cupcake and/or Cakelove - both have gotten a lot of media coverage, and TV shows dedicated to them. Be aware that there is often a long line for Georgetown Cupcake. Neither really has a place to sit - grab and go. http://georgetowncupcake.com/ http://cakelove.com/

There's both a running store (Georgetown Running) and a cycling store a few blocks down from Georgetown cupcake. You could always eat at the Tombs, check out the Exorcist stairs, and then indulge in the running and cycling stores before hitting Georgetown Cupcake.

You can hit U Street for both Ben's Chili Bowl and Cakelove - your arteries will not thank you after that meal.

Also (can't believe I forgot this before), check out Busboys and Poets for one of your meals - it's a modern DC institution, and also should be budget friendly. http://www.busboysandpoets.com/

If you're going for dinner, or during peak hours, get a reservation.

I try to stop by Filomena when i'm in Georgetown. I'm not sure if it's still really good but was always a fun dinner spot (lots of carb loading).

Just a few blocks down from Ben's Chilibowl (and Ben's Next Door which is the 'more upscale' that has amazing chicken and waffles!!) is Oohh's and Aahh's--it's fantastic even though it looks like a dive (that's why it's been on Diners Drive-ins and Dives!)--mostly carry-out but there is seating UPSTAIRS!! My boys--LOVE the mac and cheese--it's super cheesy. http://www.oohhsnaahhs.com/

Lots of good recommendations already posted though!! And if at Georgetown cupcakes check out Baked and Wired--more than just cupcakes.... http://bakedandwired.com/

Georgetown you can always get a sandwhich at Dean Deluccas or if your closer to the mall area I always liked Sonoma.

Jeez...can't believe I forgot all about Coppi's. Great food....and a cycling connection to boot.

They also picked up sponsorship of my old team after they lost Kodak as the sponsor (many ages ago!!)

+1 for Good Stuff Eatery. We were there last year, kids similar ages as yours, and wanting to stretch the dollar on meals out. Good burgers for good price.

It took awhile, but I finally discovered that its not the destination that's important, but rather the journey.
