Ever had your Quarq way off? Quote | Reply

I've been training with my quarq for about 5 weeks now and it has seemed rock-solid. I did my first race with it today. I calibrated it with my Edge 500 when I set up in transition (-192 reading). Based on comparable rides and PE, I would say that it was about 40 watts low. I performed a back pedal re-zero about half way through the ride, but it didn't make a noticeable difference. Hopefully this is just a one-off thing, but I would be interested to know if anyone else has noticed anything like this or if I am doing something "wrong" with the way I calibrated it in a race setting. One can't really sit there in T1 and do a cal.

Thanks

What has the reading been all of the other times you've zeroed your Quarq?

I think when I first used it 5 or so weeks ago it was perhaps around -100. Steadily, getting more negative, but never a big jump and never a noticeable difference in power. -186 a couple days ago I think.

I had this happen with my Quarq as well not to long ago. After the low wattage recording my zero cal started jumping all over the place. I called Quarq and they had me send it in. They paid for shipping both ways and even gave me a free bottle. I didn't like being with out the meter mid season but Quarq did a great job from a customer service stand point.

Was it a quick turn around?

Yes I shipped it out Thursday. They paid for two day shipping revived the unit Monday morning. I got an email from them tuesday with the return tracking number and had it back on Thursday. They only had it there for a day. Excellent customer service.

Re-torque your chainring bolts (since your PM is new), check your zero offset reading, and then record how it tracks over your next 3-5 rides.

Has that been too much drift in your opinion?

I was told by the guys at Quarq to not re-torq the charging bolts. He said there is some settling with regard to those bolts and if you re-torq the bolts you start over from scratch.

ok - different story than what they told me 2 years ago when i got mine. maybe improved hardware eliminates the need to verify torque. i had two bolts noticeable loosen below torque specs

New gear could be the case. I guess I should specify for the OP that I have the new sram red 2013 setup.

I have a 2010 S975. You made me think about it, so I went through some of the Quarq forum archives and there were at least 3 instances where Quarq recommended loosening, lubricating and re-torque of all the chainring bolts. They didn't say anything about that changing slope, just zero offset, though there were cautions about over torque for those who did not have steel chainring bolts.

Next time you go for a ride calibrate your pm at the start of the ride and write down or remember your number. At the end of the ride calibrate it once again. If your number is different by 50 or more you will know for sure that it needs to be sent in.

If it isn't off by 50 and still acts weird just give them a phone call. You won't find a better company to deal with.

I recently had issues with my PM dropping intermittently.

I overnighted the Quarq on Monday from Calgary, Canada and got it back on Wednesday of the very same week with a new electronic unit on it. I was blown away with the turnaround service. Outstanding, to say the least.
