Edmonton chip timing
I was reading the athlete guide for the WC race starting in just over a week. It is a multi loop swim, bike and run course. I have seen in many races, and WC's that folks cheat by not doing the multiple
laps. They are saying we are going to first start in a swim group to trigger the mats before the swim starts. Great, making sure folks are in the correct grouping and not cheating by going early, which I
have seen folks do, and get away with it since there were no swim smart timing mats.

Then there is a separate chip for the bike to I assume make sure folks do the complete course.

Never seen the chip on the bike before.

Yeah, I noticed that we have two chips too. I bet some people have "lost" their chip and skipped a loop in the past. This should help with that. It would be pretty suspicious to lose your chip off your ankle and your bike.

Never seen the second chip in my past WC races. Is this the first time? This is great since as I said, I have seen folks cheat at the WC races.

Not to hijack....but....I have read the water temperature information on the website, but I have heard rumors about the swim potentially being too warm to be wetsuit legal. Any locals have insight?

someone said they would start posting water temps on Weds. So, thats tomorrow.

The weather this week has turned colder from what I am seeing.

I am mentally preparing for anything since I have yet to go to one of these races and have it not change for weather reasons.

I hope there is a timing mat at the end of the out n back trail section. From how I interpret the run course map, we are going out on a horse trail then coming back along the biking/running trail that runs parallel to the horse trail. Needless to say there are many places where you can cut between the two trails. Since there will be no spectators/officials on this narrow trail section of the run, it would be so easy to cut the course, and judging by the threads on ST over the years, course cutters are out there.

the weather for the next week look like shit. Lows this weekend as low as 6*c lots of cloud for the next week and no highs above 20*c until tues/weds. Our 'lakes' cool off here quickly. So id say we will be in wetsuits, if not fml.

This should explain what I'm talking about: https://www.google.ca/.../data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

If this link brings you to the exact spot I was looking at, the trail closest to the golf course is the 'out' and the trail closer to the river is the 'back'. If you pan to the North and follow the river, you can see that the trails run very close together as they both have to go around the edge of the golf course. The turn around I believe is just before the bridge.

If you pan to the south, you'll see the grassy area we run across to get to the 'out' trail. The 'back' trail continues much further to the south, following the river until the end of the lake is visible. We'll then pop off the trail, onto the road, make another turnaround, and then head back towards transition. The turnaround on the road at the south end is in plain view of everyone, so nobody would dare cutting the course at this end. They've had a timing mat at this end previously.

Cheaters gon' cheat.. Cant stop them. The timing system for provincials last year at this venue seemed good, Zone4 i believe ?

Compared to weather I have seen, if this hold, will be pretty nice.

Ok... I stopped by the pond on Sunday its been refilled and they are putting in more sand on the beach. As for temps I was unable to access the pond due to the construction. The grand stands are up already. The pond is 50/50 for being over 22c after July 1.

I'm from Edmonton & just checked out the course map. Looks like it's an out & back on the same trail. After the "1km out, 3km back" portion, you'll move from the path to the road. I'm sure they will have some form of monitoring on the 1km out & back section.

Think so... I will browse the timing companies to see if any acknowledge their involvement.

Wow Thanks!

That kinda makes the whole thing real!!

along the lines of the original thread - I think it will be very interesting to see if the dual timing chip helps reduce course cutting. And if so, will it be introduced at more major races? SO, when do we begin talking about the most aero place to put the timing chip on the bike? :)

By dual chip they mean left and right ankles which I have seen the elites using 2 in ITU.

Most FINA open water use 2 as well (1 on each wrist).

From the athlete guide is sure makes it sound like they want you to put one chip on your bike...

per page 24 of the athlete guide: Timing Chip :
Two (2) timing chips are required for the Age Group Standard, and are to
be worn (one) on your left ankle and (one) on your bicycle

interesting...

In the Canadian team guide it mentioned there would be 2 wetsuit stickers in our race packages.
Anyone know what those are?

I'm from Edmonton too and have run the trails on the map. The reason why I believe they are separate trails is because there would not be enough room to have runners going out and back on the same trail. Its not single track, but trying to run 3 people wide will be pushing it. In the guide it says the 3km back section is along the trail, so we have ~8km on trail, ~2km on the hawerlak road for us Oly folks.

The trail is hard packed dirt on the 3km section, I won't tell you about the nasty short steep hill we run up to keep my local advantage. I'm running the course later this week, I'll correct myself if I'm wrong.
