East Coast Ocean Swimmers

I am headed to the east coast in a couple of weeks and was looking forward to a lot of open water ocean swimming. Is anyone still in the water at this point?

Headed there soon myself, but honestly not sure I'd do it at this point, considering there have been shark attacks at both of the beaches I normally go to. And I can't even outswim other humans, much less actual fish.

Don't head in near Long Island!!

On a serious note - Millions of people in the water daily with no attacks.....I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I went to Sullivan's Island/beach near Charleston last weekend, I went in waist deep a few times, that was about it. I was intoxicated too, sharks can smell the booze.

The sharks never concerned me but now man-o-wars are washing up in Jersey and they freak me out for some reason. I'm still going in Friday morning, we all know the exceptionally minimal odds of a bite or sting.

Great White sharks have been know to frequent our beaches. I had to postpone an open ocean swim this year on Mother's Day weekend because Mary Lee ( https://www.facebook.com/Maryleeshark ) was within a mile of my beach that weekend. Here is the site I use before I go into the ocean. ( http://www.ocearch.org/tracker/mobile/ ) I have a great respect for all apex predators and do best to stay out of their way. Man of War jelly fish, because of their sail and balloon like irridescent appearance can be avoided before they are a problem if one keeps their eyes open. The red stinger jellies are more predominant towards August when the ocean temps get warmer and will force you out of the water with their painful stings.
I swim parallel to the beach at the ocean and close to it when I do swim. I no longer swim out away from the beach. I also like to open swim in the Barnegat Bay.

Is Barnegat Bay OK? Post-Sandy I wouldn't think of swimming in it, plus with all of the sea nettles that sting the heck of everyone in the water. I am going to be in Lavallette all this week and would love to do some open water swimming, just now sure where the best/safest place would be.

I am always wearing my wetsuit when I swim in the Barnegat Bay and find it ok. Lavallette is my beach so I know it well. Philadelphia Ave. as the highest lifeguard tower and I would recommend swimming there, close to the beach. I like to swim from jetty to jetty. Mary Lee was down near Florida last I checked :)

Box jellies, too. Much worse than man'o'war.
