Is there any reason I shouldn't use the heavy quick release skewer designed for the bike trainer on my outdoor rides (would save having to swap it over)?

I do it all the time. I usually only switch it over to my lighter one for races

even professionals will leave it on for TT world championships, rather than risk screwing something up swapping skewers after warming up on the trainer.
